Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Conflict-Sensitive Communication

Abstract

Adult education plays an important role in developing knowledge and skills that enable adults to communicate effectively in situations where disagreements, differences, or tensions may arise. Conflict-sensitive communication refers to the ability to communicate in ways that recognize existing tensions, avoid language that may worsen disagreements, promote understanding, and encourage respectful interaction. Limited knowledge of conflict-sensitive communication may contribute to misunderstanding, escalation of disagreements, strained relationships, and ineffective interaction within families, workplaces, and communities. The study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of conflict-sensitive communication. Adult education provides opportunities through structured and non-formal learning activities that can expose adults to communication principles, respectful dialogue, active listening, emotional awareness, perspective-taking, and appropriate responses to sensitive issues. Through discussions, practical exercises, group activities, case analysis, and experience-sharing, adult learners can develop a better understanding of how communication can influence conflict situations. Such educational experiences may help adults recognize potentially harmful communication patterns and understand approaches that support constructive interaction. Knowledge of conflict-sensitive communication involves understanding how words, tone, listening behaviour, cultural differences, assumptions, and responses can influence interactions during tense situations. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify communication approaches that reduce misunderstanding, encourage clarification, and support respectful dialogue. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing learners with relevant information and opportunities to examine realistic communication situations, thereby improving their understanding of appropriate communication practices in potentially sensitive environments. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected adult education programmes, while a suitable sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ knowledge of conflict-sensitive communication. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to test the stated hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education is associated with improved knowledge of conflict-sensitive communication among adults. Adults who receive relevant educational exposure are expected to demonstrate better understanding of respectful language, active listening, clarification of misunderstandings, recognition of sensitive issues, and communication approaches that minimize unnecessary tension. The study may also indicate that educational exposure provides adults with useful knowledge for responding appropriately to disagreements and communicating more constructively in different social settings. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by emphasizing the inclusion of practical communication and conflict-sensitive learning content in adult education programmes. Adult educators may use role-playing, case studies, guided discussions, simulations, and reflective activities to help learners examine communication challenges and practice appropriate responses. Such approaches can make learning more practical and enable adults to connect communication knowledge with situations encountered in their everyday lives. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, families, workplaces, and programme planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge for managing sensitive conversations and reducing communication-related misunderstandings. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing relevant communication-focused learning activities, while programme planners and community organizations may use the findings to strengthen adult education programmes that promote respectful interaction and constructive communication. The study may also contribute to existing knowledge on the role of adult education in improving adults’ interpersonal communication competencies. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate conflict-sensitive communication concepts into relevant learning activities. Adult educators should employ practical teaching approaches that allow learners to analyze communication challenges, identify potentially harmful communication patterns, and practice constructive responses. Learning materials should reflect realistic situations that adults encounter in families, workplaces, and communities. It is concluded that adult education can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ knowledge of conflict-sensitive communication and supporting more respectful and constructive interactions.
