Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Cooperative Benefit Schemes
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning activities through which adults acquire relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for effective participation in social and economic activities. Cooperative benefit schemes are organized arrangements through which cooperative members may receive various benefits based on the objectives, rules, and operations of their cooperative societies. Adequate knowledge of such schemes is important because members need to understand the types of benefits available, eligibility conditions, participation requirements, and procedures for accessing them. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of cooperative benefit schemes, with the purpose of determining whether adult education can improve adults’ understanding of the benefits and conditions associated with cooperative membership. Adult education can provide adults with structured opportunities to learn about different cooperative benefit schemes and how they operate. Through workshops, group discussions, practical demonstrations, case studies, and cooperative learning activities, adults can be introduced to information concerning benefit eligibility, contribution requirements, application procedures, distribution arrangements, and members’ responsibilities. Such learning experiences can also help participants distinguish between different forms of cooperative benefits and understand how cooperative rules determine access to available schemes. Adults’ knowledge of cooperative benefit schemes involves their ability to identify available benefits, explain eligibility conditions, understand participation requirements, and recognize the procedures through which members can access relevant benefits. Adequate knowledge can help cooperative members make informed decisions about participation and take advantage of legitimate opportunities available through their cooperative societies. Adult education may therefore strengthen this knowledge by presenting cooperative benefit information in clear, practical, and accessible ways that enable adults to relate learning to their membership experiences. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and cooperative learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of cooperative benefit schemes. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of cooperative benefit schemes. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of cooperative benefit schemes. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of benefit types, eligibility conditions, contribution requirements, application procedures, and access arrangements. The study is also expected to indicate that practical learning activities can make information about cooperative benefits easier for adults to understand and apply when making decisions about participation. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, cooperative educators, community development workers, and cooperative leaders. Practitioners may incorporate practical examples, benefit-scheme case studies, group discussions, document analysis, and simulated application activities into cooperative education programmes. These approaches can help adults develop greater confidence in interpreting benefit information and understanding their responsibilities when participating in cooperative schemes. The study will be significant to cooperative members, cooperative societies, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, and policymakers interested in strengthening cooperative participation. It will provide useful information on the role of adult education in improving members’ knowledge of cooperative benefit schemes and supporting informed participation. The study will recommend accessible and practical educational programmes that explain available cooperative benefits, eligibility conditions, and participation procedures in clear terms. It will conclude that effective adult education can contribute to better-informed cooperative members and promote more meaningful participation in cooperative benefit schemes.
