Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Metal Door Fabrication

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and vocational skills that can improve their participation in productive activities and support self-reliance. Metal door fabrication involves knowledge of metal materials, fabrication tools, measurement, cutting, joining, assembly, surface preparation, and finishing procedures required to produce functional and durable doors. However, some adults may have inadequate knowledge of metal door fabrication because of limited access to organized practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of metal door fabrication. Adult education programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, discussions, guided instruction, illustrations, and supervised activities. In metal door fabrication, adults can learn about the identification of suitable metal materials, use of fabrication tools and equipment, measurement and marking, metal cutting, joining methods, frame assembly, surface preparation, and finishing procedures. These learning activities can enable adults to relate theoretical information to practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of the processes involved in metal door fabrication. Adults’ knowledge of metal door fabrication refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, measurements, and practices required to carry out basic metal door fabrication activities. Adequate knowledge is important because inaccurate measurement, improper material selection, incorrect cutting, weak joining, poor assembly, and inadequate finishing can affect the quality and functionality of fabricated doors. Adult education may therefore enhance adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate fabrication procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of metal door fabrication. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of metal door fabrication. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of metal door fabrication. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of metal materials, fabrication tools, measurement and marking, cutting, joining, frame assembly, surface preparation, and finishing procedures. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities provide adults with better opportunities to understand and retain knowledge of metal door fabrication processes. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of metal door fabrication. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide appropriate fabrication tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can improve adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and enhance their ability to apply appropriate metal door fabrication techniques in household, construction, and income-generating activities.
