Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Pattern-Making Techniques
Abstract
Pattern-making techniques involve the processes of developing templates that guide the cutting and construction of garments according to specific designs, measurements, and body shapes. Knowledge of pattern-making techniques is important because accurate patterns contribute to proper garment fit, efficient fabric use, and successful garment construction. Inadequate knowledge may result in incorrect measurements, poorly shaped patterns, fabric wastage, and difficulties during garment assembly. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical clothing and textile skills through structured, participatory, and hands-on learning activities. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of pattern-making techniques. Adult Education in this context involves structured learning activities through which adults are introduced to basic principles and procedures of pattern making. Such activities may include demonstrations, discussions, body measurement exercises, drafting practice, pattern modification, marking, cutting, and supervised pattern-development activities. Learners may be introduced to basic pattern components such as bodice, skirt, sleeve, and trouser patterns, as well as the use of measuring tapes, rulers, pattern paper, pencils, and other pattern-making tools. Practical learning enables adults to understand how measurements and design requirements are translated into usable garment patterns. Knowledge of pattern-making techniques refers to adults’ understanding of body measurements, pattern drafting, pattern components, shaping, marking, allowances, modification, and basic procedures used in developing garment patterns. Adults with adequate knowledge are better able to take appropriate measurements, construct basic patterns, make necessary adjustments, and prepare patterns for garment production. Adult Education can improve this knowledge by combining explanations with demonstrations, guided drafting exercises, repeated practice, and constructive feedback. Such learning experiences may strengthen adults’ confidence and ability to apply pattern-making knowledge to practical garment construction. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, vocational, or community-based learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of pattern-making techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of pattern-making techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of pattern-making techniques. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of body measurement, pattern drafting, pattern components, shaping, marking, allowances, and basic pattern modification. The study may further indicate that demonstrations and repeated drafting exercises contribute significantly to improved knowledge because learners are able to observe the correct procedures and apply them during supervised practical activities. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, fashion instructors, vocational trainers, community learning facilitators, and skills-development organisations. Adult Education programmes involving garment construction should provide appropriate pattern-making materials, tools, demonstrations, and opportunities for supervised practice. Practical learning can help adults connect theoretical knowledge with actual pattern-development activities and improve their accuracy in preparing garment patterns. Acquired knowledge may also provide a foundation for further development of garment-making skills and support small-scale fashion-related livelihood activities. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of pattern-making techniques. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate demonstrations, measurement exercises, basic pattern drafting, pattern modification, marking activities, and repeated opportunities for supervised practice. Adult educators should provide constructive feedback to help learners improve accuracy and understand the relationship between measurements, patterns, and garment construction. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful pattern-making knowledge for garment production, vocational development, and livelihood-related activities.
