Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Residential Building Regulations

Abstract

Residential building regulations are rules, standards, and requirements that guide the planning, construction, alteration, and use of residential buildings to promote safety, functionality, and acceptable building practices. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge that enables them to understand basic requirements governing residential buildings. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of residential building regulations, focusing on building approval requirements, structural safety, space standards, sanitation provisions, setbacks, and other basic regulatory considerations. The study is motivated by the need to improve adults’ awareness of residential building requirements and encourage informed decisions concerning housing development and use. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through discussions, demonstrations, illustrations, community learning activities, and problem-solving exercises. In relation to residential building regulations, learning activities can introduce adults to basic regulatory requirements that apply to residential construction and property development. Adults can learn about the importance of obtaining appropriate approvals, observing relevant building standards, maintaining required spaces, and providing suitable sanitation and safety facilities. Practical learning can make regulatory information easier to understand and connect it with housing situations encountered in everyday life. Adults’ knowledge of residential building regulations refers to their understanding of the basic rules and requirements that guide residential building development and use. Adequate knowledge can help adults recognize the importance of regulatory compliance, identify basic requirements, and make more informed decisions when constructing, purchasing, renovating, or occupying residential property. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by presenting regulatory concepts in simple language and using practical examples of compliant and non-compliant building practices. Improved knowledge may therefore encourage greater awareness of building standards and responsible participation in residential development. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of residential building regulations. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of residential building regulations. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education programmes has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of residential building regulations. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of building approval requirements, safety provisions, space considerations, sanitation requirements, and other basic regulatory standards. The study may further establish that practical examples, illustrations, and community-based learning activities are effective approaches for helping adults understand building regulations and appreciate the importance of compliance. The study is expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, housing educators, planning professionals, and organisations involved in community development. Adult Education programmes may incorporate simplified explanations of relevant building regulations, practical illustrations, case examples, and discussions of common residential building situations. These approaches can make regulatory information more accessible and help adults understand their responsibilities when participating in residential construction, renovation, or property-related decisions. The study will be significant to adults, homeowners, prospective property developers, tenants, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, and other stakeholders concerned with safe and responsible residential development. It is expected to recommend the integration of basic residential building regulation education into relevant Adult Education and community development programmes, with emphasis on practical and understandable learning materials. The study will conclude that appropriate Adult Education can improve adults’ knowledge of residential building regulations and contribute to more informed and responsible decisions concerning residential property development and use.
