Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Shoe Repair Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical vocational knowledge and skills that can support self-reliance, income generation, and participation in small-scale enterprises. Shoe repair involves knowledge of materials, tools, stitching, sole replacement, adhesive application, surface treatment, finishing, and other procedures required to restore or maintain footwear. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate shoe repair techniques due to inadequate access to structured vocational learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of shoe repair techniques. Adult education programmes can provide practical learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In shoe repair, adults can learn to identify footwear materials, select appropriate repair tools, assess damaged footwear, remove and replace worn components, apply suitable adhesives, perform basic stitching, repair soles, and carry out finishing procedures. These learning activities can help adults develop practical knowledge by combining explanations with direct observation and hands-on experiences. Adults’ knowledge of shoe repair techniques refers to their understanding of footwear materials, repair tools, procedures, joining methods, finishing practices, and safety measures required to carry out basic shoe repairs. Adequate knowledge is important because improper material selection, incorrect adhesive application, poor stitching, and unsuitable repair procedures can affect the durability and appearance of repaired footwear. Adult education may therefore improve knowledge by providing systematic instruction and opportunities for adults to observe and practise appropriate repair techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of shoe repair techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of shoe repair techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of shoe repair techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of footwear materials, repair tools, damage assessment, sole repair, stitching, adhesive application, component replacement, and finishing practices. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised repair activities enhance adults’ understanding and retention of shoe repair knowledge. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of shoe repair techniques. It will recommend that adult education programmes provide suitable repair tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their capacity to undertake shoe repair activities for personal and income-generating purposes.
