Abstract
Smart city technologies are increasingly being used to improve the efficiency, accessibility, sustainability, and management of urban services. These technologies include intelligent transportation systems, smart waste-management systems, digital public-service platforms, smart energy systems, environmental monitoring devices, connected infrastructure, and data-driven urban management tools. Adults’ knowledge of these technologies is important because awareness and understanding can influence how individuals interact with emerging urban services and participate in technology-driven community development. However, limited knowledge may prevent some adults from understanding the purpose, benefits, and appropriate use of smart city technologies. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of smart city technologies, with the purpose of determining whether adult education can improve their awareness and understanding of technology-enabled urban services. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge through structured lessons, demonstrations, discussions, practical activities, and experience-based learning. In relation to smart city technologies, adult education can introduce learners to the meaning and characteristics of smart cities, the technologies used to manage urban systems, and the ways these technologies support transportation, energy, sanitation, public safety, environmental monitoring, and public-service delivery. Learning activities may also expose adults to examples of connected devices, digital service platforms, intelligent infrastructure, and data-driven systems. Through practical explanations and demonstrations, learners can develop a clearer understanding of how smart technologies operate within modern urban environments. Adults’ knowledge of smart city technologies refers to their ability to identify different smart technologies, explain their purposes, recognize their applications, and understand how they contribute to the management of urban services. Adequate knowledge can help adults interact more effectively with technology-enabled public services and understand changes taking place within their communities. Adult education can provide the information and learning experiences necessary to develop this knowledge by connecting technological concepts with familiar community and urban activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of smart city technologies. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of smart city technologies. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of smart city technologies. Adults who receive relevant educational exposure are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of smart transportation, intelligent infrastructure, digital public services, environmental monitoring, smart energy systems, and other technology-supported urban services. The study may also establish that practical demonstrations and examples drawn from everyday urban activities contribute to better understanding of complex technological concepts. Such findings would highlight the value of Adult Education in preparing adults to understand and engage with technological changes affecting modern communities. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme facilitators, community educators, and curriculum developers. Adult Education programmes may need to incorporate contemporary technology-related content that helps learners understand emerging urban technologies and their practical applications. Facilitators can use demonstrations, visual resources, case examples, discussions, and practical activities to explain smart city concepts in accessible ways. Such approaches can help reduce technological knowledge gaps and enable adults to better understand how technology is being used to improve transportation, public services, environmental management, energy use, and other aspects of urban life. The study will be significant to adult learners, community organizations, urban development stakeholders, educators, and policymakers interested in technology-enabled community development. It will provide useful information on the role of adult education in improving adults’ knowledge of smart city technologies and preparing them for changes associated with increasingly technology-driven urban environments. The study will recommend the inclusion of relevant smart city concepts in appropriate Adult Education programmes and encourage practical learning approaches that connect technological developments with everyday community experiences. It will conclude that strengthening adults’ knowledge through adult education can promote greater awareness and informed participation in technology-supported urban development.
