Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Minute-Writing Skills
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning activities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies, while minute-writing skills refer to the ability to accurately record, organize, summarize, and present the important proceedings and decisions of a meeting in written form. Effective minute writing is important for maintaining reliable records, tracking decisions, assigning responsibilities, and providing evidence of discussions and resolutions. However, some adults may experience difficulties in identifying important points, recording decisions accurately, and presenting meeting proceedings in a clear and organized manner. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ minute-writing skills. Adult education provides learning opportunities through which adults can acquire practical writing, listening, comprehension, and record-keeping skills. In relation to minute writing, instructional activities can expose learners to the structure and purpose of meeting minutes, methods of recording attendance, identification of major discussions, documentation of decisions, recording of action points, and appropriate organization of meeting records. Through demonstrations, guided practice, writing exercises, and simulated meetings, adults can develop the competencies required to produce clear and useful minutes. Minute-writing skills involve the ability to listen attentively during meetings, identify significant information, distinguish discussions from decisions, summarize important contributions, record resolutions accurately, and organize information in an appropriate sequence. Adults with these skills can produce records that provide a reliable account of meeting proceedings without including unnecessary details. Adult education can strengthen these abilities by providing structured opportunities for learners to practise listening, summarizing, note taking, and written presentation in realistic meeting situations. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the effect of adult education on adults’ minute-writing skills. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured minute-writing assessment designed to evaluate participants’ ability to record and organize meeting proceedings. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on the identified skills. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ minute-writing skills. Adults exposed to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in identifying important information, summarizing discussions, recording decisions, documenting action points, and presenting meeting proceedings in an organized manner. The study is also expected to show that practical writing exercises and simulated meeting activities can improve learners’ accuracy, clarity, and confidence in preparing meeting minutes. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can integrate practical record-keeping and communication activities into their programmes to strengthen learners’ minute-writing competencies. Simulated meetings, listening exercises, note-taking activities, guided minute-writing tasks, peer review, and corrective feedback can provide learners with opportunities to develop and apply these skills. Such approaches can make adult education more practical and relevant to organizational and community situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, workplace groups, voluntary associations, and institutions that conduct regular meetings. Adult learners may acquire useful skills for documenting discussions and decisions, while adult educators may gain effective approaches for teaching practical writing and record-keeping competencies. Organizations may also benefit from individuals who can produce accurate and well-organized meeting records that support continuity, accountability, and follow-up. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical activities that develop minute-writing skills. Adult educators should provide learners with regular opportunities to participate in simulated meetings, practise note taking, identify key decisions, summarize discussions, and prepare complete meeting minutes. Constructive feedback should be provided to improve accuracy, organization, clarity, and completeness. The study concludes that adult education can significantly contribute to improving adults’ minute-writing skills and enhance their capacity to maintain effective records of meetings and organizational activities.
