Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Local Disaster Preparedness Activities

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning activities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, and competencies for personal, social, economic, and community development, while participation in local disaster preparedness activities refers to the involvement of adults in activities designed to anticipate, prevent, prepare for, and respond effectively to disasters and emergencies within their communities. Disaster preparedness is important because adequate preparation can reduce risks, protect lives and property, and improve community response during emergencies. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of disaster risks and preparedness practices, which can affect their involvement in local preparedness activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in local disaster preparedness activities. Adult education provides learning opportunities through literacy programmes, community education, health education, vocational training, environmental education, civic education, and other forms of continuing education. Through discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises, workshops, and community-based learning activities, adults can acquire knowledge and skills that are applicable to everyday challenges. Adult education can also expose learners to information about safety practices, emergency procedures, community risks, and appropriate responses to different situations. Participation in local disaster preparedness activities involves adults’ involvement in activities such as emergency awareness programmes, disaster preparedness training, community safety exercises, emergency planning, first-aid training, evacuation drills, and other local preparedness initiatives. Such participation requires individuals to understand relevant information and recognize appropriate preparedness practices. Adult education may therefore influence participation by providing adults with useful knowledge and practical skills for understanding disaster risks and taking part in preparedness activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a disaster preparedness knowledge assessment designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in local disaster preparedness activities. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in local disaster preparedness activities. It is anticipated that adults who participate in relevant adult education programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in preparedness activities and improved understanding of appropriate disaster preparedness practices. The study may also establish that adult education provides useful knowledge and practical learning experiences that can encourage adults to become more actively involved in local emergency preparedness efforts. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators should incorporate practical disaster preparedness content into relevant community-based learning programmes. Discussions, demonstrations, emergency simulations, safety exercises, and problem-solving activities can provide adults with opportunities to understand preparedness procedures and apply them to realistic situations. Such approaches can make adult education more responsive to community safety and emergency preparedness needs. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, disaster management organizations, community organizations, emergency response agencies, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved knowledge and greater involvement in activities designed to prepare communities for disasters. Adult educators may gain useful information for developing relevant preparedness-focused learning activities, while disaster management organizations and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen community education initiatives aimed at improving local preparedness. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical disaster preparedness education that reflects the risks and emergency needs of local communities. Adult educators should use participatory methods such as demonstrations, simulations, drills, group discussions, and practical exercises to strengthen learners’ preparedness knowledge. Community organizations and disaster management agencies should also collaborate with adult education providers to organize regular preparedness activities. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to increased participation in local disaster preparedness activities among adults.
