Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Participation in Museum and Heritage Learning Activities

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while museum and heritage learning activities are educational experiences that enable individuals to learn about historical objects, cultural materials, monuments, traditions, archaeological resources, and other forms of heritage. Participation in museum and heritage learning activities can broaden adults’ knowledge of history and culture and provide opportunities for experiential and informal learning. However, limited exposure to adult education opportunities may affect adults’ interest in and involvement with museums and heritage-related learning. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in museum and heritage learning activities. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to learn through formal, non-formal, and informal educational experiences. These may include community classes, workshops, lectures, discussions, educational visits, and practical learning activities. Through such experiences, adults can develop knowledge acquisition skills, critical thinking abilities, and greater awareness of educational resources within their environment. Adult education can also introduce learners to museums, heritage institutions, historical collections, and cultural resources as sources of knowledge beyond the conventional classroom. Adults’ participation in museum and heritage learning activities refers to their involvement in educational experiences organized around museums, historical collections, cultural sites, and heritage resources. Such activities may include guided museum visits, exhibitions, heritage lectures, object-based learning sessions, historical demonstrations, and discussions about cultural artefacts. Adult education may influence this participation by increasing adults’ awareness of museums as learning environments and developing their interest and ability to obtain knowledge from museum and heritage resources. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on adults’ exposure to adult education and their participation in museum and heritage learning activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ participation in museum and heritage learning activities. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ participation in museum and heritage learning activities. Adults with greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate greater involvement in museum visits, exhibitions, heritage lectures, guided learning sessions, and other museum-based educational activities. The findings may further indicate that adult education increases awareness of museums as valuable learning environments and encourages adults to make greater use of heritage resources for educational purposes. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by demonstrating the value of museums and heritage institutions as complementary learning environments for adults. Adult educators may incorporate museum visits, object-based learning, exhibitions, historical collections, and heritage resources into appropriate educational programmes. Such approaches can provide adults with practical and experiential learning opportunities that complement classroom-based instruction and make learning more engaging and meaningful. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, museum educators, museum administrators, heritage organizations, community learning centres, educational institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may gain greater opportunities to acquire knowledge through direct interaction with historical and cultural resources. Adult educators and museum professionals may also obtain useful information for developing educational activities that encourage adult engagement with museums and heritage resources. The study will recommend that adult education providers should collaborate with museums and heritage institutions to organize accessible educational visits, guided learning sessions, exhibitions, lectures, and practical heritage activities for adults. Museum educators should develop learning programmes that respond to the interests and educational needs of adult learners, while adult educators should incorporate museum resources into relevant learning activities. Adequate educational materials, trained facilitators, and accessible museum programmes should also be provided. The study concludes that effective adult education can promote adults’ participation in museum and heritage learning activities by increasing awareness, interest, and engagement with museums and heritage resources.
