Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Archival Preservation

Abstract

Adult Education provides adults with knowledge and skills that can promote the protection, organisation, and continued accessibility of valuable records and historical materials. Archival preservation refers to the processes and practices used to protect records and documents of lasting value from deterioration, damage, loss, and inappropriate handling. Such materials may include manuscripts, photographs, letters, official records, maps, audiovisual materials, and other documentary resources. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of archival preservation. The study will focus on how educational experiences can improve adults’ knowledge of the importance, principles, and basic practices associated with preserving archival materials. Adult Education can introduce learners to the nature and importance of archival materials and the factors that may threaten their long-term preservation. Through discussions, demonstrations, practical examples, and community-based learning activities, adults can develop awareness of appropriate storage, handling, organisation, environmental protection, and documentation practices. Such learning experiences may also help adults understand the importance of protecting valuable records from moisture, excessive heat, physical damage, poor handling, and other conditions that can contribute to deterioration. Adults’ understanding of archival preservation involves their knowledge of the value of archival materials, common preservation challenges, and appropriate practices for protecting records over time. It includes awareness of careful handling, suitable storage conditions, proper organisation, preservation of original materials, and responsible access to archival resources. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by providing practical information that enables adults to recognize the importance of preserving records that contain historical, administrative, cultural, or community value. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of archival preservation. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of archival preservation. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of archival preservation. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved knowledge of archival materials, preservation threats, appropriate storage practices, and responsible handling procedures. The study may further establish that practical demonstrations and examples can make archival preservation concepts easier for adults to understand and encourage greater appreciation of the importance of protecting valuable records. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, archivists, libraries, cultural institutions, and organisations responsible for maintaining valuable records. Incorporating archival preservation topics into Adult Education programmes may provide adults with practical knowledge that can be applied when managing family records, community documents, historical materials, photographs, and other valuable resources. Practical activities involving record identification, safe handling, storage, and basic preservation may also encourage greater community responsibility for documentary heritage. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, archivists, libraries, cultural institutions, community organisations, and other stakeholders interested in protecting documentary heritage. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes should incorporate appropriate learning activities on archival preservation and provide adults with practical knowledge about the responsible care of valuable records. The study concludes that Adult Education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ understanding of archival preservation and promoting greater awareness of the importance of protecting records for present and future use.
