Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Basic Sound Recording

Abstract

Basic sound recording refers to the process of capturing, storing, and producing audio using appropriate recording devices, microphones, recording environments, and basic audio techniques. Adult education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical understanding of the fundamental principles involved in sound recording. Adequate understanding of sound recording is important for producing clear audio content, supporting digital communication, developing creative skills, and creating opportunities for participation in media-related activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of basic sound recording. Adult education can expose learners to sound recording through practical demonstrations, guided practice, group activities, audio exercises, simulations, and instructional materials. These learning activities can introduce adults to basic recording equipment such as microphones, audio recorders, headphones, mixers, and recording software. Learners can also be guided on microphone positioning, recording levels, sound monitoring, noise reduction, file storage, and basic audio organization. Practical exercises can enable adults to observe recording procedures, practise using equipment, and understand how different techniques influence the quality of recorded sound. Adults’ understanding of basic sound recording refers to their ability to identify, explain, and appropriately apply fundamental procedures involved in capturing and managing audio. This includes understanding the functions of basic recording equipment, microphone use, recording levels, sound monitoring, recording environments, and simple audio file management. Improved understanding can enable adults to make appropriate decisions when preparing and producing basic audio recordings. Adult education is therefore expected to strengthen this understanding by combining relevant information with practical opportunities for experimentation and guided learning. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, creative media, digital skills, and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate sound-recording knowledge and understanding assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of basic sound recording. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of basic sound recording. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of basic sound recording. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of recording equipment, microphone handling, recording levels, sound monitoring, recording environments, and basic audio file management. The study may also indicate that practical demonstrations and guided recording exercises are particularly useful for helping adults connect theoretical information with actual sound-recording activities. Such findings would demonstrate the value of adult education in developing practical digital media knowledge and creative skills. The study is significant because improved understanding of basic sound recording can support adults’ participation in digital content creation, community media, creative activities, and livelihood opportunities. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes incorporate practical sound-recording exercises, equipment demonstrations, guided practice, and simple audio production projects. Educators should also provide learners with opportunities to practise recording, monitor audio quality, and manage recorded files appropriately. The study concludes that adult education can serve as an important means of improving adults’ understanding of basic sound recording and strengthening their practical capacity to participate in audio-related activities.
