Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Clothing Repair Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support household management, personal development, and vocational activities. Clothing repair techniques involve practical methods used to restore, maintain, and extend the usefulness of damaged or worn garments. These techniques may include mending tears, replacing buttons, repairing seams, fixing zippers, patching damaged areas, and carrying out simple alterations. However, some adults may have limited understanding of appropriate clothing repair methods. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of clothing repair techniques and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their knowledge of basic garment repair practices. Adult education can provide practical learning experiences through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and hands-on activities. In clothing-related learning programmes, adults can be introduced to different repair techniques and taught how to select suitable methods according to the type and extent of garment damage. Learning activities may involve demonstrating hand-stitching techniques, seam repairs, button replacement, zipper repair, patch application, and simple garment adjustments. Such practical experiences can enable learners to connect explanations with actual repair activities and develop greater familiarity with appropriate clothing maintenance procedures. Understanding clothing repair techniques involves knowing the appropriate methods, materials, tools, and procedures required to restore different types of garment damage. Adults need to recognize the nature of a clothing problem and determine the repair technique most suitable for addressing it. Adequate understanding can help individuals reduce unnecessary disposal of clothing, maintain garment appearance, extend clothing lifespan, and manage household resources more effectively. Adult education may therefore contribute to improved understanding by providing learners with practical demonstrations, opportunities for supervised practice, and relevant information about garment repair. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of clothing repair techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of clothing repair techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of clothing repair techniques. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of appropriate repair methods, materials, tools, and procedures for addressing common clothing problems. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and hands-on repair exercises can strengthen learners’ ability to select suitable techniques and apply them to simple garment repair situations. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, vocational instructors, sewing facilitators, and skills-development programme developers. Adult education programmes can incorporate practical repair demonstrations, garment-repair exercises, visual instructional materials, and supervised activities to strengthen learners’ understanding. Providing opportunities to practise different repair techniques can make learning more meaningful while helping adults develop useful skills for household clothing maintenance and possible small-scale vocational activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, vocational training providers, sewing practitioners, and stakeholders interested in practical skills development and resource management. It will recommend that adult education programmes provide appropriate tools, materials, and practical learning opportunities for clothing repair activities. The study will conclude that well-organized adult education can improve adults’ understanding of clothing repair techniques and strengthen their ability to maintain, repair, and extend the useful life of garments.
