Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Common Computer Faults

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their digital competence, self-reliance, employability, and ability to perform everyday technology-related tasks. Computers are widely used for communication, education, business, record management, and other activities, making basic knowledge of common computer faults increasingly important. However, inadequate understanding of computer faults may make it difficult for adults to identify problems, determine possible causes, and take appropriate basic corrective actions. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of common computer faults. Adult education activities related to computer maintenance may expose adults to common faults such as system freezing, slow performance, failure to start, overheating, unexpected shutdowns, keyboard or mouse malfunction, display problems, connectivity difficulties, and software errors. Learning activities may include demonstrations, discussions, fault-identification exercises, troubleshooting simulations, practical computer activities, and guided problem-solving tasks. These experiences can help adults understand the symptoms, possible causes, and basic troubleshooting procedures associated with common computer faults. Adults’ understanding of common computer faults refers to their ability to identify, describe, and explain common computer problems, their possible causes, and appropriate basic troubleshooting procedures. This may include understanding hardware-related problems, software errors, power-related issues, peripheral-device faults, performance problems, and basic connectivity difficulties. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by combining relevant explanations with practical activities that enable adults to observe common faults and apply appropriate troubleshooting procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education, digital literacy, vocational, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a computer faults understanding assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of common faults, possible causes, and basic troubleshooting procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of common computer faults. The study is expected to establish that adult education can improve adults’ understanding of common computer faults. Adults exposed to structured learning are expected to demonstrate better understanding of fault identification, possible causes, troubleshooting procedures, hardware problems, software errors, peripheral-device issues, and basic connectivity difficulties. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and guided troubleshooting activities enhance adults’ ability to recognize common computer faults and respond appropriately to basic problems. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective means of improving adults’ understanding of common computer faults. It will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, computer-based troubleshooting exercises, fault-identification activities, and opportunities for guided practice. Improved understanding of common computer faults may contribute to greater digital competence, effective computer use, reduced dependence on others for basic troubleshooting, employability, self-reliance, and improved participation in technology-related activities
