Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Household Maintenance Procedures

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning activities designed to provide adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies, while understanding of household maintenance procedures refers to adults’ knowledge of the appropriate steps and practices involved in maintaining household facilities, equipment, and living spaces in functional and safe conditions. Proper household maintenance can help preserve household resources, improve living conditions, and reduce avoidable deterioration. However, inadequate knowledge of maintenance procedures may limit adults’ ability to manage routine household maintenance effectively. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of household maintenance procedures. Adult education can expose adults to important household maintenance procedures involving cleaning, inspection, routine care, minor maintenance activities, safe use of household facilities, and recognition of situations requiring professional assistance. Through demonstrations, discussions, visual materials, practical exercises, and guided activities, adults can acquire knowledge about appropriate maintenance practices. Such educational activities can help learners understand the importance of regular maintenance and distinguish appropriate maintenance procedures from practices that may cause further damage. Understanding household maintenance procedures involves knowledge of routine inspection, appropriate cleaning and care, safe maintenance practices, proper handling of household facilities, and the appropriate steps for addressing common maintenance needs. Adults who receive relevant educational instruction may develop greater awareness of these procedures and become better prepared to apply appropriate maintenance practices in their homes. The study will therefore investigate whether adult education contributes to improved understanding of household maintenance procedures among adults. The study will adopt an appropriate research design, such as a descriptive survey or quasi-experimental design, depending on the study setting. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire or knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of household maintenance procedures. The data obtained will be analysed using suitable descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that exposure to adult education improves adults’ understanding of household maintenance procedures. Adults who receive relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of routine inspection, cleaning and care, safe maintenance practices, and appropriate responses to household maintenance needs. These expected findings would emphasize the importance of practical adult education in developing knowledge that supports effective household management. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of practical household management within adult education programmes. Adult educators can incorporate demonstrations, visual materials, household examples, practical exercises, and scenario-based activities into lessons. These approaches can make maintenance concepts easier to understand and enable adults to connect theoretical knowledge with practical household activities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, households, adult educators, community organizations, housing-related organizations, and institutions involved in household management education. Adults may develop improved knowledge of appropriate maintenance procedures and become more capable of managing routine household maintenance needs. Educators and community organizations may also use the findings to strengthen practical household-management programmes and address gaps in adults’ maintenance knowledge. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical instruction on household maintenance procedures, emphasizing routine inspection, cleaning and care, safe practices, and appropriate professional assistance where necessary. Demonstrations, visual materials, practical exercises, and periodic refresher activities should be used to reinforce learning. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ understanding of household maintenance procedures and contribute to better household management and maintenance practices.
