Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Philanthropy

Abstract

Adult Education plays an important role in developing adults’ knowledge and understanding of issues that influence individual and community development. Understanding of philanthropy refers to adults’ knowledge of charitable giving, voluntary contributions, community support, social responsibility, and the various ways individuals can contribute resources toward addressing social needs. However, limited knowledge of philanthropic principles and practices may restrict adults’ ability to recognize meaningful opportunities for supporting individuals, organizations, and community initiatives. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of philanthropy, with the purpose of determining whether participation in Adult Education can improve their knowledge of philanthropic concepts and practices. Adult Education can expose learners to the meaning, purposes, forms, and principles of philanthropy through structured learning experiences. Adults can learn about monetary donations, material contributions, volunteering, skills-based support, fundraising, charitable organizations, community initiatives, and other forms of voluntary assistance. Learning activities may also introduce participants to the principles of responsible giving, including identifying genuine community needs, considering the intended beneficiaries, and understanding how contributions can be organized and utilized. Through discussions, case studies, group activities, and practical examples, adults can develop broader knowledge of philanthropy and its relevance to community wellbeing. Understanding philanthropy is important because adults who possess adequate knowledge of philanthropic practices are better positioned to recognize appropriate ways of contributing to social causes. Such understanding can help adults distinguish different forms of philanthropic activity, identify the purposes of charitable initiatives, and appreciate the relationship between individual contributions and broader community development. Adult Education may therefore strengthen this understanding by providing adults with relevant information and opportunities to examine real-life examples of charitable and community-support activities. Improved knowledge can also help learners develop a more informed perspective toward giving, volunteering, and other forms of community assistance. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of philanthropy. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of philanthropy. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of philanthropy. Adults who receive relevant educational exposure may demonstrate better knowledge of philanthropic concepts, forms of contribution, charitable activities, responsible giving practices, and the role of philanthropy in addressing community needs. The study is also expected to indicate that practical and participatory learning activities can improve adults’ ability to connect philanthropic principles with real-life community situations and recognize appropriate opportunities for meaningful contribution. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, charitable groups, and facilitators of community-based learning programmes. Incorporating philanthropy-related content into Adult Education can provide adults with practical knowledge about voluntary contributions, charitable initiatives, community needs, and responsible support practices. Activities such as case studies, community discussions, group projects, and analysis of philanthropic initiatives can make learning more practical and encourage adults to develop a clearer understanding of the social value of philanthropy. The study will be significant to adult learners, community organizations, charitable initiatives, community leaders, and Adult Education practitioners by providing insight into the role of education in improving adults’ understanding of philanthropy. It will recommend that relevant philanthropic concepts be incorporated into appropriate Adult Education programmes through practical and participatory learning approaches. Community organizations may also collaborate with Adult Education practitioners to provide accurate information about charitable activities and community-support opportunities. The study will conclude that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of philanthropy and strengthen their capacity to appreciate and participate responsibly in activities that contribute to community wellbeing.
