Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Professional Workplace Behaviour

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that can support effective participation in different areas of life, including the workplace. Professional workplace behaviour refers to the appropriate conduct, attitudes, responsibilities, and interpersonal practices expected of individuals in professional environments. Limited understanding of workplace behaviour may result in inappropriate conduct, poor relationships, communication difficulties, and reduced effectiveness at work. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of professional workplace behaviour. Adult education on professional workplace behaviour can expose learners to important workplace expectations and standards. These may include punctuality, responsibility, respect for colleagues, appropriate workplace communication, cooperation, personal accountability, appropriate appearance, confidentiality, and adherence to organizational procedures. Through discussions, case studies, practical examples, role-play, and workplace-based learning activities, adults can examine appropriate and inappropriate behaviours and understand their possible consequences in professional settings. Adults’ understanding of professional workplace behaviour involves their ability to recognize appropriate conduct, explain workplace expectations, and distinguish professional behaviour from inappropriate conduct. Such understanding can help adults make better decisions when interacting with colleagues, supervisors, customers, and other workplace stakeholders. Adult education can provide structured opportunities for learners to examine workplace situations and develop a clearer understanding of professional standards. Increased educational exposure may therefore strengthen adults’ knowledge of the behaviours required for effective participation in professional environments. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of professional workplace behaviour. The population will consist of selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured assessment of professional workplace behaviour administered before and after exposure to the educational programme. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ understanding. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to structured education on professional workplace behaviour demonstrate improved understanding compared with their level of knowledge before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show greater awareness of workplace responsibilities, appropriate interpersonal conduct, professional communication, accountability, respect, and adherence to workplace standards. The findings may indicate that adult education can provide useful knowledge for preparing adults to understand and navigate professional expectations. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use workplace scenarios, case studies, role-play, group discussions, and problem-based activities to help learners examine professional behaviour in realistic situations. Teaching should connect workplace principles with practical examples that adults can easily relate to and apply. Regular classroom discussions and assessment activities may also help learners strengthen their understanding of appropriate professional conduct. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, employers, workplaces, professional organizations, and institutions providing continuing education programmes. Adults may gain a clearer understanding of professional expectations and the conduct required in different workplace situations. Educators may also obtain useful information for developing employment-oriented adult education programmes, while employers may benefit from workers who possess better knowledge of appropriate workplace behaviour and professional standards. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate professional workplace behaviour education through case studies, role-play, practical scenarios, discussions, and workplace-oriented learning activities. Adult educators should emphasize responsibility, respect, accountability, appropriate communication, cooperation, confidentiality, and compliance with workplace procedures. Learning programmes should also provide opportunities for adults to examine common workplace situations and identify appropriate professional responses. The study concludes that relevant adult education has the potential to improve adults’ understanding of professional workplace behaviour and prepare them for more effective participation in professional environments.
