Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Shared Household Responsibilities
Abstract
Adult Education can contribute to adults’ understanding of the importance of sharing responsibilities within the household. Household responsibilities involve activities such as maintaining the home, caring for family members, managing routine tasks, and contributing to household decisions. When these responsibilities are not clearly understood or fairly coordinated, disagreements, stress, and unequal participation may occur among household members. Adult Education can provide adults with knowledge and opportunities for reflection on cooperation, communication, mutual support, and responsible participation in household activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of shared household responsibilities. Adult Education provides learning experiences that can expose adults to concepts relating to cooperation, responsibility, communication, family relationships, decision-making, and equitable participation. Through discussions, group activities, case studies, role-playing, and practical learning exercises, adults can examine how household responsibilities may be identified, discussed, coordinated, and shared among family members. Such activities can help learners understand the importance of recognizing the contributions of different household members and communicating expectations clearly. Exposure to these learning experiences may also encourage adults to reflect on how cooperation can support effective household functioning. Adults’ understanding of shared household responsibilities refers to their awareness of the different tasks, duties, contributions, and obligations that may be undertaken collectively by household members. This understanding involves recognizing that household responsibilities can include domestic activities, caregiving, household decision-making, maintenance, and other routine obligations. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by encouraging adults to examine household roles, discuss expectations, and appreciate the importance of cooperation. A clearer understanding of shared responsibilities can help adults communicate more effectively and participate more constructively in managing household activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ exposure to Adult Education and their understanding of shared household responsibilities. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of shared household responsibilities. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of shared household responsibilities. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate greater awareness of the importance of cooperation, communication, participation, and mutual responsibility within household settings. The study may further establish that discussions and practical learning activities help adults recognize different household responsibilities and develop clearer understanding of how such responsibilities can be coordinated among household members. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning activities that address practical family and household responsibilities. Practitioners may incorporate discussions, case studies, role-playing, problem-solving activities, and practical scenarios involving household cooperation and responsibility. Such activities can help adults examine household expectations, communicate more effectively about responsibilities, and appreciate the value of coordinated participation in household activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, families, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, and other stakeholders concerned with effective household relationships and cooperation. It is expected to recommend greater inclusion of practical family-life and responsibility-related learning activities within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Adult Education can contribute to adults’ understanding of shared household responsibilities by promoting awareness, cooperation, communication, mutual support, and responsible participation in household activities.
