Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of the Blue Economy

Abstract

Adult Education can play an important role in improving adults’ understanding of emerging economic concepts and opportunities associated with sustainable resource utilization. The blue economy refers broadly to economic activities connected with aquatic and marine resources, including fisheries, aquaculture, water transportation, tourism, renewable energy, and other water-related activities, while emphasizing the sustainable use and protection of aquatic environments. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the meaning, components, benefits, and sustainability principles of the blue economy. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of the blue economy and determine whether educational exposure can improve their knowledge of sustainable water-based economic activities. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge about aquatic resources, water-based industries, sustainable resource management, and the relationship between economic development and aquatic environmental protection. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can be introduced to major areas of the blue economy, including fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic tourism, transportation, coastal and marine services, and other water-related economic activities. Education can also help learners understand the importance of responsible resource utilization, environmental conservation, innovation, and sustainable practices within blue-economy activities. Adults’ understanding of the blue economy refers to their ability to explain the concept, identify its major components, recognize relevant economic activities, and understand the importance of sustainability in the utilization of aquatic resources. Adequate understanding can help adults recognize the economic and livelihood possibilities associated with aquatic environments while appreciating the need for responsible resource management. Adult Education can strengthen this understanding through structured information, practical discussions, resource-based learning, environmental activities, and opportunities to examine real-life applications of the blue economy. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of the blue economy. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of the blue economy. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of the blue economy. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate greater knowledge of aquatic resources, blue-economy sectors, sustainable resource utilization, water-based economic activities, and environmental considerations. The study may further establish that educational exposure enables adults to better appreciate the relationship between aquatic-resource conservation and economic development. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, environmental educators, and livelihood-support organisations. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical learning activities that expose adults to the principles and applications of the blue economy. Facilitators can use resource-mapping exercises, case studies, group discussions, environmental projects, and community-based learning activities to improve learners’ understanding of aquatic economic activities and sustainable resource management. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to emerging economic sectors and environmental concerns. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, environmental organisations, livelihood-support organisations, aquatic-resource enterprises, and programme developers by providing insight into the contribution of education to adults’ understanding of the blue economy. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide structured learning opportunities covering blue-economy concepts, aquatic resources, sustainable economic activities, environmental conservation, and livelihood possibilities. The study concludes that Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of the blue economy and support more informed participation in sustainable water-based economic activities.
