Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of the Creative Economy

Abstract

The creative economy refers to economic activities that generate value through creativity, cultural expression, knowledge, skills, and intellectual or artistic content. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge about emerging economic sectors and understand how creative abilities can contribute to employment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and community development. As creative industries continue to create opportunities in areas such as design, crafts, digital content, fashion, music, publishing, and other creative services, understanding the creative economy is increasingly important for adults. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of the creative economy. Adult Education can expose learners to the major concepts, characteristics, and activities associated with the creative economy. Through structured learning experiences, adults can learn about creative industries, intellectual property, cultural products, digital creativity, creative entrepreneurship, innovation, and the commercial value of creative skills. Such education can help learners understand how individual talents and creative ideas can be transformed into products, services, and economic opportunities while also appreciating the role of creativity in contemporary economic development. Adults’ understanding of the creative economy involves their ability to explain its meaning, identify its major sectors, and recognize how creativity, culture, skills, and intellectual assets contribute to economic activity. Adults with relevant knowledge may be better positioned to distinguish creative-economy activities from conventional economic activities and identify opportunities within creative industries. Improved understanding can also help adults appreciate the importance of intellectual property protection, creative entrepreneurship, digital platforms, and professional development in the creative sector. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of the creative economy. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of the creative economy. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of the creative economy. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of creative industries, creative entrepreneurship, cultural products, digital creativity, intellectual property, and other components of the creative economy. The study may also reveal that practical learning experiences strengthen adults’ ability to recognise creative-economic opportunities and understand how creativity can contribute to livelihood development. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating creative-economy concepts into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine creative industries, identify locally relevant creative activities, explore entrepreneurial possibilities, and discuss the economic value of creative skills. Such activities may strengthen adults’ awareness of emerging economic opportunities while encouraging the development and application of their creative abilities. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, creative entrepreneurs, community organisations, creative-industry stakeholders, and policymakers interested in expanding economic participation. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities on creative industries, creative entrepreneurship, intellectual property, cultural production, digital creativity, innovation, and market opportunities. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of the creative economy and support greater awareness of the economic value and opportunities associated with creativity and cultural production.
