Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Workplace Leave Entitlements
Abstract
Adult education provides adults with knowledge and practical skills that can improve their understanding of important workplace rights and responsibilities. Workplace leave entitlements provide employees with opportunities to take approved periods away from work for recognized purposes while maintaining awareness of relevant organizational requirements. However, inadequate knowledge of leave entitlements may make it difficult for adults to understand available leave provisions, eligibility requirements, application procedures, and workplace expectations. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of workplace leave entitlements. Adult education can provide learners with practical knowledge about different forms of workplace leave, eligibility conditions, application processes, approval procedures, and employee responsibilities. Through structured instruction, discussions, examples, and workplace-based learning activities, adults can become more familiar with the information contained in organizational leave policies. Practical exercises involving hypothetical workplace situations can also help learners understand how leave provisions may apply in different circumstances. Adults’ understanding of workplace leave entitlements refers to their ability to identify available leave provisions, understand their basic requirements, and recognize the procedures associated with requesting and using approved leave. Adequate understanding can help employees make informed decisions and communicate appropriately with their employers regarding leave-related matters. Adult education is expected to improve this understanding by increasing adults’ knowledge of workplace policies and their ability to interpret relevant information. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners or workers, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess participants’ knowledge of workplace leave entitlements, including types of leave, eligibility requirements, application procedures, and employee responsibilities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to relevant adult education demonstrate better understanding of workplace leave entitlements than those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of available leave provisions, eligibility conditions, application procedures, and responsibilities associated with taking approved leave. This improved understanding may enable adults to make more informed workplace decisions. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education and workplace learning by highlighting the importance of practical instruction on employment-related information. Adult educators and workplace trainers can use simplified policy materials, workplace examples, discussions, and practical exercises to improve learners’ understanding of leave entitlements. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, employees, workplace trainers, educators, employers, and organizations seeking to improve employees’ knowledge of workplace policies. The study recommends that adult education and workplace training programmes should include accessible information on workplace leave entitlements and related procedures. Educators should provide practical learning activities that enable adults to identify relevant leave provisions and understand the basic requirements associated with them. It is concluded that adult education can improve adults’ understanding of workplace leave entitlements and contribute to greater awareness of workplace rights, responsibilities, and procedures.
