Effect of Adult Education on Parents’ Ability to Support Children’s Reading Development

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for improving their personal, family, and social lives, while children’s reading development refers to the gradual improvement of children’s ability to recognize words, understand written texts, develop vocabulary, and read with increasing fluency. Parents play an important role in supporting children’s reading development through activities such as reading with children, providing reading materials, discussing stories, encouraging regular reading, and assisting with reading difficulties. However, some parents may have limited knowledge and skills to provide effective reading support at home. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on parents’ ability to support children’s reading development. Adult education provides parents with opportunities to acquire literacy, communication, educational, and practical skills that can be applied within the home. Through adult learning programmes, parents may improve their own reading abilities and acquire knowledge about appropriate ways of supporting children’s learning. Such programmes may expose parents to techniques for reading aloud, asking questions about texts, encouraging children to practise reading, selecting age-appropriate reading materials, and creating a supportive reading environment at home. Parents’ ability to support children’s reading development involves their capacity to provide appropriate assistance, encouragement, materials, and learning activities that promote children’s reading progress. Effective parental support may include helping children practise reading, discussing books and stories with them, correcting reading difficulties appropriately, and encouraging interest in reading. Adult education may strengthen this ability by improving parents’ knowledge and practical skills for supporting reading activities and responding appropriately to their children’s reading needs. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of parents who participate in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and parents’ ability to support children’s reading development. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on parents’ ability to support children’s reading development. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on parents’ ability to support children’s reading development. Parents who have greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate stronger knowledge and skills in assisting children with reading activities, providing appropriate reading materials, encouraging reading practice, and creating supportive reading environments at home. The study may also identify areas where parents require additional educational support to effectively assist their children’s reading development. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult education programmes can incorporate practical family literacy content that equips parents with appropriate strategies for supporting children’s reading. Adult educators can use demonstrations, guided reading activities, storytelling, practical exercises, and home-based learning tasks to help parents develop skills that can be applied directly in supporting children’s reading development. The study will be significant to parents, adult learners, children, adult educators, primary school teachers, educational administrators, and policymakers. Parents may benefit from improved knowledge and skills for supporting their children’s reading activities, while children may benefit from increased educational assistance at home. Adult educators and teachers may also gain useful information for strengthening cooperation between adult education programmes and family literacy activities. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical family literacy activities that help parents develop effective strategies for supporting children’s reading development. Adult educators should provide parents with simple and practical techniques for reading with children, discussing texts, selecting suitable reading materials, and encouraging regular reading practice. Collaboration between adult education centres and primary schools should also be encouraged to provide parents with relevant guidance on supporting children’s reading at home. The study concludes that adult education can play an important role in strengthening parents’ ability to support children’s reading development.
