Effect of Adult Education on Parents’ Participation in Early Childhood Learning Activities

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies for personal, family, and social development, while parents’ participation in early childhood learning activities refers to their involvement in activities that support the learning and development of young children. Parents may face challenges such as limited educational knowledge, inadequate understanding of early childhood learning needs, and difficulties supporting children’s learning activities at home. Adult education can equip parents with relevant knowledge and skills that may improve their ability to support and participate in their children’s early learning experiences. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on parents’ participation in early childhood learning activities. Adult education provides learning opportunities through literacy programmes, parenting education, community learning, family education, and continuing education activities. These programmes can provide parents with knowledge about child development, early learning practices, communication, learning support, and appropriate ways of engaging young children in educational activities. Through such learning experiences, parents may develop practical skills that enable them to understand and respond more effectively to the educational needs of their children. Parents’ participation in early childhood learning activities involves activities such as reading with children, assisting with learning tasks, engaging children in educational games, communicating with teachers, attending school activities, and providing learning materials and support at home. Parents who acquire relevant knowledge through adult education may become more confident and capable of participating in these activities. Adult education can therefore contribute to parental participation by improving parents’ understanding of early childhood learning and their ability to provide appropriate educational support. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents participating in selected adult education programmes and those with children enrolled in early childhood education centres. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education and parents’ involvement in early childhood learning activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant positive effect on parents’ participation in early childhood learning activities. It is expected that parents who participate in adult education programmes will demonstrate greater knowledge of early learning needs and increased involvement in reading, educational play, learning support, communication with teachers, and other activities that promote children’s learning. The findings may further indicate that adult education can strengthen parents’ capacity to contribute meaningfully to early childhood education. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of incorporating family-oriented learning and parenting education into adult education programmes. Adult educators may provide practical activities that help parents understand child development, learning through play, early literacy, and ways of supporting children’s learning at home. Such approaches may enable parents to apply the knowledge acquired through adult education to their children’s everyday learning experiences. The study will be beneficial to parents, children, adult educators, early childhood educators, adult education centres, educational administrators, and policymakers. Parents may benefit from improved knowledge and skills for supporting their children’s early learning, while early childhood educators may gain greater parental cooperation in learning activities. Adult education providers and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen programmes that connect adult learning with family and early childhood education. The study recommends that adult education providers should incorporate practical parenting and early childhood learning content into relevant adult education programmes. Parents should be encouraged to participate actively in learning opportunities that strengthen their ability to support children’s educational development. Early childhood education centres should also promote constructive communication between parents and educators. It is concluded that effective adult education can significantly improve parents’ participation in early childhood learning activities by strengthening their knowledge, confidence, and practical ability to support young children’s learning.
