Effect of Adult Education on Participation in Community Activities among Migrant Adults

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences for personal and social development, while participation in community activities refers to the involvement of individuals in organized programmes, groups, initiatives, and events within their communities. Migrant adults may experience limited involvement in community activities because of unfamiliar social environments, limited community connections, communication difficulties, and inadequate awareness of available opportunities. This study will examine the effect of adult education on participation in community activities among migrant adults. Adult education provides migrant adults with opportunities to acquire useful knowledge and skills through literacy programmes, language learning, vocational training, workshops, discussion groups, and community-based learning. These programmes can improve communication abilities, increase awareness of community issues, and provide opportunities for learners to interact with other adults. Through continued learning, migrant adults may develop greater confidence and understanding of their community environment. Participation in community activities among migrant adults involves involvement in community associations, cultural events, voluntary activities, recreational programmes, neighbourhood initiatives, and other organized activities. Adult education may encourage participation by providing knowledge about community opportunities and creating learning environments where migrant adults interact with others. The skills and experiences acquired through adult education may also help migrant adults contribute more effectively to activities within their communities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise migrant adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education and participation in community activities among migrant adults. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant positive effect on participation in community activities among migrant adults. It is expected that migrant adults who participate regularly in adult education programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in community associations, cultural activities, voluntary programmes, recreational activities, and other organized community initiatives. The study may also establish that adult education provides migrant adults with knowledge, skills, and opportunities that encourage active community involvement. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of migrant adults in adult education programmes. Adult educators should use participatory and practical teaching approaches that connect learning with community experiences. Group discussions, collaborative learning, community-based projects, role-play, and practical activities can help migrant adults develop communication and interpersonal skills while becoming familiar with opportunities for community involvement. The study will be beneficial to migrant adults, adult educators, community learning providers, migrant-support organizations, community development agencies, and policymakers. Migrant adults may benefit from improved knowledge, skills, confidence, and opportunities for community involvement, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing programmes that encourage active participation. Community organizations may also use the findings to develop educational initiatives that help migrant adults become more involved in community activities. The study will recommend that adult education providers develop accessible and inclusive programmes that prepare migrant adults for meaningful community involvement. Adult educators should incorporate community-based learning, collaborative activities, practical communication exercises, and information about local community opportunities into their programmes. Community organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to create opportunities for migrant adults to participate in community activities. In conclusion, adult education can equip migrant adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and confidence that can encourage greater participation in community activities.
