Effect of Adult Education on Participation in Community Cultural Programmes

Abstract

Adult education is an important means of providing adults with knowledge, skills, and awareness that can contribute to their personal and community development. Community cultural programmes provide opportunities for adults to engage in activities such as cultural exhibitions, traditional performances, storytelling, arts and crafts, cultural festivals, and other organised programmes that promote cultural expression. However, some adults show limited involvement in such programmes due to inadequate awareness, limited knowledge, or reduced interest. This study will examine the effect of adult education on participation in community cultural programmes, with the purpose of determining whether adult education influences adults’ involvement in organised cultural activities. Adult education exposes learners to knowledge about culture, community values, traditions, social practices, and the importance of preserving cultural knowledge. Through discussions, community learning activities, cultural education, workshops, and practical learning experiences, adults can develop greater awareness of their cultural environment. Such learning experiences can also improve adults’ understanding of the relevance of cultural programmes and encourage them to become more interested in organised cultural activities within their communities. Participation in community cultural programmes refers to adults’ involvement in organised activities designed to promote cultural knowledge, expression, and interaction within the community. These may include cultural festivals, traditional performances, storytelling sessions, arts and crafts exhibitions, cultural workshops, and related activities. Adult education may influence participation by increasing adults’ awareness of cultural programmes, improving their understanding of cultural values, and developing their confidence to become actively involved in cultural activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners and adult community members in selected communities where organised cultural programmes are available. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community cultural programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in community cultural programmes. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate higher levels of awareness, interest, and involvement in cultural programmes. The study may also establish that adult education helps adults recognise the educational and social value of cultural activities and encourages greater involvement in programmes organised within their communities. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate culturally relevant learning activities that expose adults to local traditions, creative expression, community history, and cultural practices. Learning activities involving cultural discussions, demonstrations, storytelling, and practical cultural experiences may help learners develop greater appreciation and willingness to engage in community cultural programmes. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community cultural organisations, cultural programme coordinators, community leaders, and educational planners. Adult learners may benefit from increased awareness of cultural learning opportunities, while adult educators may gain useful information for integrating community cultural resources into adult learning programmes. Cultural organisations and community leaders may also use the findings to develop programmes that encourage greater adult involvement. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate culturally relevant activities that increase adults’ awareness and understanding of community cultural programmes. Community cultural organisations should provide accessible and engaging programmes that encourage adult involvement, while adult educators should collaborate with cultural programme organisers to connect learning with local cultural activities. The study will conclude that adult education can contribute meaningfully to increased participation in community cultural programmes among adults.
