Effect of Adult Education on Participation in Community Volunteer Programmes
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and capacities, while participation in community volunteer programmes refers to adults’ involvement in organized activities through which individuals voluntarily contribute their time, skills, or resources to address identified needs within their communities. Community volunteer programmes can support social welfare, community services, educational activities, and other local needs. However, inadequate awareness, limited skills, and low understanding of volunteer opportunities may affect adults’ participation. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult education on participation in community volunteer programmes. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills through literacy classes, workshops, seminars, community-based learning, practical activities, and other educational experiences. These programmes can expose adults to concepts such as social responsibility, teamwork, communication, leadership, cooperation, and community service. Through these learning experiences, adults may develop greater awareness of community needs and acquire practical competencies that can be applied when participating in volunteer programmes. Participation in community volunteer programmes involves joining organized volunteer activities, attending programme events, contributing time and skills, assisting with community services, and supporting activities designed to address identified local needs. Adult education may influence participation by increasing adults’ awareness of volunteer opportunities, developing relevant skills, and improving their confidence to contribute. Adults who receive appropriate educational exposure may therefore be better prepared to participate effectively in community volunteer programmes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community volunteer programmes. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on participation in community volunteer programmes. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate higher awareness of volunteer opportunities, stronger willingness to volunteer, and greater involvement in organized community volunteer programmes. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of connecting educational experiences with practical community service. Adult educators may incorporate group projects, service-learning activities, discussions, leadership exercises, and community-based assignments into adult education programmes. These approaches can help learners develop practical competencies while providing opportunities to apply acquired knowledge through appropriate volunteer activities. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, community volunteer organizations, community leaders, social development practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to design learning activities that encourage responsible community service, while volunteer organizations may benefit from increased involvement of adults with relevant knowledge and skills. Community leaders and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen educational approaches that support volunteerism and community service. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate volunteer-oriented learning activities and provide adults with information about appropriate community volunteer opportunities. Adult educators should encourage practical projects, teamwork, leadership activities, and community service experiences that develop learners’ capacity to volunteer effectively. Community volunteer organizations should collaborate with adult education providers to create suitable opportunities for adults to apply their knowledge and skills. The study will conclude that effective adult education can strengthen adults’ awareness, skills, confidence, and willingness to participate in community volunteer programmes.
