Effect of Adult Education on Participation in Mental Wellness Programmes
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning activities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and capacity to respond effectively to issues affecting their everyday lives, while participation in mental wellness programmes refers to adults’ involvement in organized activities aimed at promoting emotional well-being, healthy coping, stress management, and positive mental health practices. Participation in such programmes is important because adults may experience various personal, social, and occupational pressures that can affect their overall well-being. However, limited awareness and inadequate knowledge may reduce adults’ willingness to participate in available mental wellness programmes. This study will examine the effect of adult education on participation in mental wellness programmes. Adult education can provide adults with relevant knowledge about mental wellness, emotional well-being, stress management, healthy coping strategies, relaxation practices, and the importance of seeking appropriate support. Learning activities may be delivered through discussions, workshops, group learning, practical exercises, and community-based educational programmes. By presenting mental wellness information in an understandable and relevant manner, adult education can improve adults’ awareness of available wellness programmes and encourage them to become more actively involved in activities that support their well-being. Participation in mental wellness programmes involves adults’ attendance, involvement, and engagement in organized activities such as stress-management sessions, wellness workshops, relaxation programmes, counselling-related educational activities, and other appropriate mental wellness initiatives. Regular participation can expose adults to useful knowledge and strategies for maintaining emotional well-being and managing everyday pressures. Adult education may therefore influence participation by increasing awareness, improving understanding, and reducing misconceptions about mental wellness programmes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes and community-based learning activities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in mental wellness programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ participation in mental wellness programmes. It is expected that adults who receive relevant educational exposure will demonstrate greater awareness and participation in appropriate mental wellness programmes than adults with limited exposure to adult education. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by highlighting the importance of incorporating mental wellness education into adult learning programmes. Adult educators can use discussions, practical activities, group learning, and relatable examples to help adults understand mental wellness and the value of participating in wellness programmes. Such approaches can make adult learning more responsive to adults’ personal well-being and everyday needs. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community educators, mental wellness programme providers, healthcare professionals, and organizations involved in adult learning and health promotion. Adult learners may benefit from improved awareness of mental wellness opportunities, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing relevant educational programmes. Programme providers and community organizations may also use the findings to strengthen educational strategies for encouraging appropriate participation in mental wellness initiatives. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include relevant mental wellness information and create opportunities for adults to learn about available wellness programmes. Adult educators should employ participatory and practical teaching methods to improve understanding and encourage informed involvement. Collaboration between adult education providers and appropriate mental wellness professionals should also be encouraged when developing educational activities. The study concludes that effective adult education can contribute to increased participation in mental wellness programmes among adults.
