Effect of Adult Education on the Participation of Older Adults in Community Activities
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences for personal and social development, while participation in community activities refers to the involvement of individuals in organized activities, programmes, groups, and initiatives within their communities. Older adults may experience reduced involvement in community affairs because of retirement, changes in social roles, limited opportunities, or age-related challenges. This study will examine the effect of adult education on the participation of older adults in community activities. Adult education provides opportunities for older adults to acquire useful knowledge and skills through literacy classes, workshops, discussion groups, skills development, community learning, and continuing education programmes. These learning experiences can improve adults’ awareness of issues affecting their communities and provide opportunities to develop communication, cooperation, and organizational skills. Adult education can therefore prepare older adults to become more informed and capable of engaging in activities within their communities. Participation in community activities among older adults involves involvement in community associations, development initiatives, cultural programmes, voluntary activities, recreational events, and other organized community activities. Adult education may encourage such participation by increasing knowledge, confidence, communication skills, and awareness of available community opportunities. Through continued learning, older adults may become more willing and prepared to contribute their knowledge and experience to community activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise older adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community activities among older adults. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant positive effect on the participation of older adults in community activities. It is expected that older adults who participate in adult education programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in organized community activities and show increased willingness to contribute their knowledge, skills, and experiences. The study may also establish that continued learning can strengthen the confidence and awareness required for active community involvement. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning approaches used in adult education programmes for older adults. Adult educators should incorporate practical community-based learning, group discussions, collaborative activities, and problem-solving exercises that connect learning with real-life community issues. Such approaches can help older adults apply acquired knowledge and skills while encouraging meaningful involvement in community activities. The study will be beneficial to older adults, adult educators, community learning providers, community organizations, social development agencies, and policymakers. Older adults may benefit from increased opportunities to use their knowledge and experiences in community settings, while adult educators may gain information for designing programmes that encourage active community involvement. Community organizations may also use the findings to strengthen educational approaches for engaging older adults in community activities. The study will recommend that adult education providers develop programmes that equip older adults with relevant knowledge, communication skills, and practical abilities for community involvement. Adult educators should incorporate community-based projects, collaborative learning, and practical activities into adult education programmes. Community organizations should also create accessible opportunities for older adults to apply their knowledge and skills in community activities. In conclusion, adult education can provide older adults with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and awareness needed to participate more actively in community activities.
