Effect of Adult Learner Study Groups on Learning Engagement
Abstract
Adult learner study groups refer to organized or informal groups in which adult learners come together to discuss academic materials, exchange ideas, solve learning problems, and support one another, while learning engagement refers to the extent to which learners actively participate in, concentrate on, and commit themselves to learning activities. Study groups can provide adult learners with opportunities for collaborative learning and academic support. However, inadequate opportunities for collective study may limit learners’ involvement in educational activities. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult learner study groups on learning engagement. Adult learner study groups involve learners meeting regularly to review course materials, discuss difficult concepts, complete academic tasks, share experiences, and prepare for assessments. These groups may operate within or outside formal classroom settings and may be facilitated by learners or supported by adult education facilitators. Through regular interaction, members can exchange knowledge, clarify areas of difficulty, provide encouragement, and develop shared approaches to learning. The effectiveness of study groups may depend on the regularity of meetings, quality of discussions, cooperation among members, and relevance of activities to learners’ educational needs. Learning engagement refers to learners’ active involvement in educational activities, including attention to lessons, participation in discussions, effort devoted to learning tasks, persistence, and interest in academic activities. Adult learners often combine education with work, family responsibilities, and other commitments, which may affect the amount of attention and effort they devote to their studies. Participation in study groups may provide additional opportunities for learners to discuss academic issues, receive assistance, maintain interest, and remain committed to learning tasks. Thus, effective study groups may contribute to stronger learning engagement among adult learners. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure the extent of participation in study groups and learning engagement. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of study groups on learning engagement. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learner study groups has a significant effect on learning engagement. Adult learners who regularly participate in well-organized study groups are expected to demonstrate greater attention, effort, persistence, and involvement in learning activities. The findings are also expected to show that opportunities for collaborative study can encourage learners to remain actively involved in their educational activities. The findings will have important implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult education facilitators may encourage learners to form structured study groups that promote academic discussion, peer assistance, collaborative problem-solving, and review of learning materials. Facilitators may also provide guidance on effective group study practices and encourage learners to use study groups as supplementary learning opportunities. Such practices may help create a more supportive learning environment for adults who have different educational experiences and responsibilities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education facilitators, programme administrators, adult education institutions, and education planners. Adult learners may benefit from opportunities for academic support and collaborative study, while facilitators may gain useful information on how study groups can strengthen learners’ involvement in educational activities. Programme administrators and institutions may use the findings to encourage learner-led academic support initiatives, while education planners may apply the findings when developing strategies for improving engagement in adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education institutions should encourage the formation of well-organized study groups and provide learners with suitable opportunities to meet and discuss academic matters. Facilitators should guide learners in developing productive study-group activities and encourage active contribution from members. Learners should also make effective use of study groups for reviewing course materials, discussing challenging topics, and supporting one another academically. In conclusion, well-organized adult learner study groups can provide valuable opportunities for strengthening learning engagement among adult learners.
