Effect of Adult Learners’ Self-Directed Learning Practices on Their Learning Achievement

Abstract

Self-directed learning practices refer to the ways in which adult learners independently identify their learning needs, set educational goals, select learning resources, manage study activities, monitor their progress, and evaluate their learning outcomes, while learning achievement refers to the level of knowledge, skills, understanding, and academic performance attained by learners after engaging in educational activities. Adult learners often have to take greater responsibility for managing their own learning because of their different personal, occupational, and educational commitments. This study will examine the effect of adult learners’ self-directed learning practices on their learning achievement, with the purpose of determining whether self-directed learning practices influence the learning outcomes of adult learners. Self-directed learning involves learners taking initiative and responsibility for various aspects of their educational activities. Adult learners may establish personal learning goals, organise study schedules, select appropriate learning materials, search for additional information, practise learned concepts, and monitor their progress. These practices encourage learners to become actively involved in planning and managing their educational activities rather than depending entirely on instructors for direction. Learning achievement refers to the extent to which learners attain expected educational outcomes after participating in learning activities. It may be demonstrated through improved knowledge, understanding, skills, performance in assessments, completion of learning tasks, and ability to apply acquired knowledge. Adult learners who consistently plan their learning activities, manage their study time, seek relevant resources, and assess their progress may be better positioned to achieve expected learning outcomes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure self-directed learning practices, while learners’ achievement will be assessed using an appropriate achievement measure. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learners’ self-directed learning practices have a significant effect on their learning achievement. It is expected that adult learners who demonstrate stronger self-directed learning practices will record higher levels of learning achievement than those who demonstrate weaker self-directed learning practices. The study may further establish that effective goal setting, study planning, resource utilisation, progress monitoring, and independent learning activities contribute to improved learning outcomes. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators may need to encourage learners to develop practical self-directed learning habits alongside classroom instruction. Learning activities can provide opportunities for adults to set learning goals, locate relevant resources, organise their study activities, monitor their progress, and evaluate their understanding. Such practices may help learners become more responsible and active participants in their own education. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, adult education programme administrators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from developing stronger independent learning practices that can improve their educational outcomes. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing learning activities that encourage learner independence, while educational planners and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen approaches that promote effective learning among adults. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate activities that encourage self-directed learning among adult learners. Adult educators should guide learners in setting realistic learning goals, planning study activities, identifying appropriate learning resources, monitoring progress, and evaluating learning outcomes. Learners should also be encouraged to take greater responsibility for their educational activities. The study will conclude that effective self-directed learning practices can improve learning achievement among adult learners and should therefore be encouraged in adult education programmes.
