Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Wound-Care Procedures
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and competencies that can improve their ability to respond appropriately to common injuries and everyday safety situations. Basic wound-care procedures refer to the appropriate initial practices used to manage minor wounds while maintaining safety and recognizing situations that require professional medical attention. Adequate knowledge of these procedures is important because inappropriate wound management may increase the risk of complications or delay appropriate care. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures. Adult learning can provide participants with opportunities to acquire wound-care knowledge through demonstrations, discussions, visual materials, practical exercises, simulations, and guided learning activities. These experiences can introduce adults to basic wound assessment, safe preparation, appropriate cleaning and protection of minor wounds, and the importance of seeking professional assistance when necessary. Practical demonstrations can help learners distinguish appropriate wound-care practices from unsafe approaches. Scenario-based activities can also enable participants to consider different situations and identify suitable responses. Knowledge of basic wound-care procedures involves adults’ understanding of appropriate initial steps for managing minor wounds safely and recognizing circumstances that require further professional assessment. It includes knowledge of basic wound assessment, hygiene and safety considerations, appropriate protection of wounds, and the importance of monitoring situations that may require medical attention. Adequate knowledge can help adults respond more appropriately to minor injuries while avoiding unsafe practices. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this knowledge by combining clear explanations with demonstrations, practical examples, and guided activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, first aid, community safety, and health education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of appropriate initial wound-care practices, safety measures, basic wound protection, and situations requiring professional medical attention. The study is also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations, guided exercises, and realistic injury scenarios can strengthen adults’ understanding and preparedness to respond appropriately to minor wounds. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, first aid instructors, community educators, workplace safety trainers, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes should incorporate practical demonstrations and appropriate scenarios that allow participants to develop a clearer understanding of basic wound-care procedures. Facilitators should emphasize safe practices, appropriate hygiene, recognition of situations requiring professional care, and the importance of avoiding interventions beyond the learner’s level of training. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, workplace participants, educators, and organizations interested in basic emergency preparedness and safety education. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide accessible and practical instruction on basic wound-care procedures through demonstrations, guided activities, and appropriate scenario-based learning. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of basic wound-care procedures and strengthen their preparedness to respond safely and appropriately while professional assistance is sought when necessary.
