Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of POP Ceiling Installation Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, employment opportunities, and participation in construction-related activities. POP ceiling installation involves knowledge of materials, tools, measurements, surface preparation, framework arrangement, mixing, application, shaping, finishing, and safety procedures. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate POP ceiling installation techniques because of inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of POP ceiling installation techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In POP ceiling installation, adults can learn about the identification and handling of relevant materials and tools, accurate measurement, preparation of work surfaces, framework arrangement, mixing and application of POP materials, shaping, smoothing, and finishing procedures. These learning activities can help adults connect theoretical explanations with practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of the procedures involved in POP ceiling installation. Adults’ knowledge of POP ceiling installation techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, measurements, and safety practices required for carrying out basic POP ceiling installation activities. Adequate knowledge is important because errors in measurement, framework arrangement, material preparation, application, alignment, and finishing can affect the appearance, strength, and quality of a ceiling installation. Adult learning may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate installation procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of POP ceiling installation techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of POP ceiling installation techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of POP ceiling installation techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of POP materials, tools, measurements, framework preparation, material mixing, application, shaping, alignment, finishing, and safety procedures. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised hands-on activities enhance adults’ understanding and retention of knowledge relating to POP ceiling installation. The study will conclude that adult learning can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of POP ceiling installation techniques. It will recommend that adult learning and vocational programmes provide appropriate tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and adequate safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply appropriate POP ceiling installation techniques in construction, renovation, and other relevant activities.
