Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Wig-Making Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and vocational skills that can support self-employment, income generation, and personal development. Wig-making involves various techniques such as selection of suitable materials, preparation of wig-making tools, measurement, construction of wig foundations, attachment of hair, styling, finishing, and proper maintenance. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate wig-making techniques due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of wig-making techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In wig-making, adults can learn how to identify and select appropriate materials, use wig-making tools, prepare wig foundations, measure and arrange hair properly, attach hair securely, style finished wigs, and maintain quality during the production process. These learning activities can enable adults to connect explanations with practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of the procedures involved in producing wigs. Adults’ knowledge of wig-making techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, measurements, construction methods, styling practices, and finishing processes required for effective wig production. Adequate knowledge is important because poor measurement, improper attachment, inappropriate material selection, weak construction, and inadequate finishing can affect the quality, appearance, and durability of wigs. Adult learning may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate wig-making procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of wig-making techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of wig-making techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of wig-making techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of wig-making materials, tools, measurements, foundation preparation, hair attachment, styling, finishing, and maintenance procedures. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised hands-on activities provide adults with better opportunities to understand and retain knowledge relating to wig production. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of practical wig-making techniques. It will recommend that adult learning and vocational programmes provide adequate wig-making tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant guidance on quality production and safe tool handling. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their capacity to apply wig-making techniques for personal, entrepreneurial, and income-generating purposes.
