Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Wood Carving Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, self-employment, and participation in creative activities. Wood carving is a practical craft that involves knowledge of wood types, carving tools, design preparation, shaping methods, surface treatment, and appropriate safety practices. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of wood carving techniques due to inadequate access to structured learning and practical training opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of wood carving techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In wood carving, adults can learn about the identification and selection of suitable wood, preparation of carving surfaces, handling of carving tools, transferring designs, basic cutting and shaping techniques, detailing, smoothing, and finishing. These learning experiences can help adults connect theoretical explanations with practical activities while developing a better understanding of the processes involved in wood carving. Adults’ knowledge of wood carving techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, designs, and safety practices required for carrying out basic wood carving activities. Adequate knowledge is important because improper tool handling, unsuitable wood selection, inaccurate design transfer, and inappropriate carving procedures can affect the quality of finished products and create avoidable safety risks. Adult learning may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate wood carving techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of wood carving techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of wood carving techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of wood carving techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of wood selection, carving tools, design preparation, cutting and shaping, detailing, smoothing, finishing, and safety practices. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised hands-on activities enhance adults’ ability to understand, retain, and apply knowledge relating to basic wood carving procedures. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of wood carving techniques. It will recommend that adult learning and vocational programmes provide appropriate carving tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, relevant instructional resources, and adequate safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support creative and vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply appropriate wood carving techniques in productive and income-generating activities.
