Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Customer Relationship Practices
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support entrepreneurship, employment, business development, and effective interaction with customers. Customer relationship practices refer to the methods businesses use to establish, maintain, and strengthen positive relationships with customers through effective communication, service delivery, feedback, complaint handling, and follow-up. However, some adults may have limited understanding of the practices required to maintain satisfactory customer relationships. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of customer relationship practices and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their knowledge of effective customer relationship management. Adult learning can provide practical experiences through discussions, role-playing, case studies, demonstrations, group activities, and problem-solving exercises. In business-related learning programmes, adults can be introduced to practices such as identifying customer needs, communicating professionally, responding to enquiries, handling complaints, collecting feedback, maintaining customer records, and following up with customers. Learning activities can expose participants to different customer-service situations and provide opportunities to discuss appropriate responses. Such experiences can help adults connect customer relationship concepts with realistic business interactions. Understanding customer relationship practices involves knowing how to communicate effectively with customers, identify their needs, respond appropriately to concerns, manage complaints, provide useful information, and maintain professional relationships. Adults need to appreciate the importance of customer satisfaction, trust, responsiveness, courtesy, consistency, and follow-up in sustaining positive customer relationships. Adequate understanding can help individuals interact more effectively with customers and contribute to improved business reputation and customer retention. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this understanding by combining relevant concepts with practical examples and simulated customer-service situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, entrepreneurship, and business-skills programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of customer relationship practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of customer relationship practices. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of customer relationship practices. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of customer communication, needs assessment, complaint handling, feedback management, customer follow-up, and relationship maintenance. The findings are also expected to indicate that role-playing, case studies, and practical customer-service exercises can strengthen learners’ ability to understand and respond appropriately to different customer relationship situations. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, entrepreneurship educators, business trainers, customer-service facilitators, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes should incorporate realistic customer-service scenarios, role-playing activities, case discussions, communication exercises, and practical complaint-resolution tasks. Such activities can make learning more meaningful and help adults develop greater confidence in applying customer relationship practices within businesses, workplaces, and entrepreneurial activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, entrepreneurs, small-business owners, customer-service personnel, business training providers, and stakeholders interested in enterprise development. It will recommend that adult learning programmes include practical customer relationship activities and provide learners with opportunities to practise effective communication, complaint handling, feedback management, and customer follow-up. The study will conclude that well-organized adult learning can improve adults’ understanding of customer relationship practices and strengthen their ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with customers.
