Effect of Childcare Support on Women’s Participation in Adult Education Programmes

Abstract

Childcare support refers to arrangements and services that assist parents or caregivers in providing appropriate care for their children, while women’s participation in adult education programmes refers to women’s enrollment, attendance, engagement, and continued involvement in organized learning activities. Childcare responsibilities can create practical challenges for women who wish to pursue education, particularly when learning activities conflict with their caregiving responsibilities. Providing appropriate childcare support may therefore help reduce barriers that limit women’s participation in adult education. This study will examine the effect of childcare support on women’s participation in adult education programmes. Childcare support may include the provision of childcare facilities near learning centres, supervised childcare during class periods, flexible childcare arrangements, and other organized services that enable women to attend educational activities while their children are adequately cared for. Such support can reduce the difficulty of combining educational responsibilities with childcare duties. When childcare arrangements are accessible and suitable, women may find it easier to attend classes, participate in learning activities, and remain enrolled in adult education programmes. Women’s participation in adult education programmes involves enrollment, regular attendance, active involvement in classroom activities, completion of learning activities, and continuation in educational programmes. Consistent participation enables women to benefit fully from the knowledge and skills provided through adult education. Childcare support may influence participation by reducing interruptions caused by childcare responsibilities and creating conditions that allow women to devote more time and attention to their education. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise women enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure the availability and use of childcare support and women’s participation in adult education programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that childcare support has a positive effect on women’s participation in adult education programmes. It is expected that women who have access to appropriate childcare support will demonstrate higher levels of attendance, engagement, and continued participation in adult education programmes than women who have limited or no access to such support. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the importance of creating learning arrangements that accommodate the responsibilities of adult learners. Adult education providers can consider childcare needs when planning class schedules, learning centre facilities, and support services. Flexible learning arrangements and accessible childcare provisions can create a more supportive learning environment for women with young children. The study will be significant to women adult learners, adult educators, learning centre administrators, community education providers, educational planners, childcare service providers, and organizations supporting adult education. Women may benefit from improved opportunities to participate consistently in educational programmes, while adult educators and programme administrators may gain useful information for identifying and reducing childcare-related barriers to learning. Educational planners may also use the findings when developing learner-support policies and facilities. The study recommends that adult education providers should consider incorporating appropriate childcare support into programmes where women with childcare responsibilities are enrolled. Learning centres should explore accessible childcare arrangements, flexible class schedules, and other practical support measures that can reduce interruptions to women’s education. Adult educators and programme administrators should also identify childcare-related barriers faced by learners and develop suitable responses. The study concludes that effective childcare support can contribute to increased participation of women in adult education programmes.
