Effect of Community-Based Adult Education on the Integration of Migrant Families
Abstract
Community-based adult education refers to organized learning activities provided within community settings to equip adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences relevant to their daily lives and social environment, while integration of migrant families refers to the extent to which migrant families establish relationships, adapt to their communities, access local opportunities, and develop a sense of belonging. Migrant families may encounter challenges such as language barriers, unfamiliar social practices, limited community networks, and difficulties accessing available services. This study will examine the effect of community-based adult education on the integration of migrant families. Community-based adult education can include literacy classes, language learning, skills training, orientation programmes, discussion groups, and practical community learning activities. These programmes provide migrant adults with opportunities to acquire useful knowledge while interacting with educators, other learners, and members of the wider community. Through relevant and accessible learning experiences, migrant families may develop communication abilities, practical knowledge, and greater familiarity with their community environment. The integration of migrant families involves their ability to establish social relationships, communicate effectively, participate in community life, access educational and social opportunities, and develop a sense of belonging. Community-based adult education can support these processes by providing learning environments where migrant adults acquire practical knowledge and interact with others. Participation in community-based learning may therefore help migrant families become more familiar with their surroundings and participate more effectively in their communities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise migrant adults from selected migrant families participating in community-based adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in community-based adult education and the level of integration of migrant families. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community-based adult education has a significant positive effect on the integration of migrant families. It is expected that migrant families whose adult members participate in community-based education will demonstrate stronger communication with community members, greater awareness of local opportunities, increased social relationships, and a stronger sense of belonging. The study may also establish that accessible community learning opportunities can support the adjustment and integration of migrant families. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of migrant adults in community-based education programmes. Adult educators should use practical, participatory, and inclusive teaching approaches that connect learning with the everyday experiences of migrant families. Group discussions, language activities, orientation exercises, collaborative learning, and community-based practical tasks may help learners acquire useful knowledge while encouraging interaction and cooperation. The study will be beneficial to migrant families, adult educators, community learning providers, migrant-support organizations, community development agencies, and policymakers. Migrant families may benefit from improved opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and establish connections within their communities, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing more responsive community-based programmes. Organizations supporting migrant populations may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that promote family integration. The study will recommend that adult education providers develop accessible and inclusive community-based programmes that respond to the educational and social needs of migrant families. Adult educators should incorporate practical communication activities, community orientation, collaborative learning, and experience-sharing into their programmes. Community organizations should also provide supportive learning environments and increase awareness of available educational opportunities among migrant families. In conclusion, community-based adult education can provide migrant families with valuable learning and social opportunities that support their integration and strengthen their connection with the communities in which they live.
