Effect of Community Education on Intergenerational Interaction among Adults
Abstract
Community education refers to organized learning activities provided within communities to promote knowledge acquisition, skills development, social learning, and collective development, while intergenerational interaction refers to communication, cooperation, learning, and relationship-building between adults from different age groups. Differences in age, experiences, interests, and social roles may sometimes limit interaction between generations. This study will examine the effect of community education on intergenerational interaction among adults. Community education provides opportunities for adults of different age groups to learn together through literacy programmes, skills training, workshops, discussion groups, cultural activities, and community-based learning. These activities can bring individuals from different generations into shared learning environments where they exchange knowledge, experiences, ideas, and perspectives. Through collaborative learning experiences, community education can create opportunities for adults to understand and appreciate the experiences of other generations. Intergenerational interaction among adults involves communication, knowledge sharing, cooperation, mutual support, and learning between people from different generations. Effective interaction can promote understanding, reduce age-related barriers, and encourage the transfer of knowledge and experiences across generations. Community education may strengthen such interaction by providing shared learning experiences in which adults from different age groups work together toward common educational goals. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected community education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in community education and the level of intergenerational interaction among adults. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community education has a significant positive effect on intergenerational interaction among adults. It is expected that adults who participate in community education programmes that encourage shared learning will demonstrate greater communication, cooperation, knowledge exchange, and interaction with adults from different age groups. The study may also establish that community learning environments can provide opportunities for adults to develop greater understanding and respect across generations. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning approaches used in community education. Adult educators should adopt collaborative and participatory methods that encourage learners from different generations to work together. Group discussions, peer learning, experience-sharing activities, practical projects, and intergenerational learning exercises can provide opportunities for adults to exchange knowledge and perspectives while developing positive relationships. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community education providers, community organizations, social development agencies, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from opportunities to learn from people of different generations, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing inclusive learning environments. Community organizations may also use the findings to develop educational activities that encourage knowledge exchange and cooperation among different age groups. The study will recommend that community education providers design learning activities that deliberately encourage interaction among adults from different generations. Adult educators should incorporate collaborative tasks, intergenerational discussions, peer learning, and experience-sharing activities into community education programmes. Community organizations should also provide supportive environments where adults of different age groups can learn and work together. In conclusion, community education can provide an effective platform for strengthening communication, cooperation, knowledge sharing, and positive intergenerational interaction among adults.
