Effect of Community Learning Programmes on Adults’ Participation in Reconciliation Activities
Abstract
Community learning programmes are organized educational activities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and opportunities for learning within their communities, while reconciliation activities involve efforts to rebuild relationships, promote mutual understanding, address past disagreements, and encourage peaceful coexistence among individuals or groups. Effective reconciliation can help communities recover from divisions and establish more constructive relationships. However, limited knowledge and opportunities for learning about reconciliation may affect adults’ willingness and ability to participate in such activities. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of community learning programmes on adults’ participation in reconciliation activities. Community learning programmes may include community-based classes, discussion groups, workshops, educational forums, literacy activities, and participatory learning sessions. These programmes provide adults with opportunities to exchange experiences, examine community issues, develop critical thinking, and learn from different perspectives. Through interactive learning processes, adults may develop greater understanding of cooperation, tolerance, dialogue, forgiveness, and peaceful relationship-building. Adults’ participation in reconciliation activities involves attending reconciliation meetings, participating in dialogue sessions, supporting relationship-building efforts, sharing experiences, listening to different perspectives, and contributing to activities designed to improve relationships among community members. Meaningful participation requires willingness to communicate, understand differing experiences, and contribute to constructive efforts. Community learning programmes may therefore influence participation by creating opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and skills that are relevant to reconciliation processes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in community learning programmes and adults’ involvement in reconciliation activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community learning programmes have a positive effect on adults’ participation in reconciliation activities. Adults with greater exposure to community learning opportunities are expected to demonstrate stronger willingness to participate in activities aimed at rebuilding relationships and promoting mutual understanding. The study may further establish that interactive learning experiences can improve adults’ knowledge of dialogue, cooperation, tolerance, and other approaches relevant to reconciliation. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because community learning can connect educational experiences with practical social issues affecting adults’ everyday lives. Participatory methods such as group discussions, experience sharing, role-playing, and community-based activities can provide opportunities for adults to examine different perspectives and develop constructive approaches to relationships. Adult educators can therefore use community-oriented learning methods to support learning for peaceful relationship-building. The study will be beneficial to adults, adult education practitioners, community leaders, peace educators, community organizations, education planners, and researchers. Adults may gain knowledge and skills that encourage constructive involvement in reconciliation activities, while community leaders and organizations may benefit from increased community engagement in relationship-building efforts. Adult education practitioners and education planners may also use the findings to strengthen community learning programmes that address reconciliation needs. The study will recommend that community learning programmes incorporate educational activities focusing on dialogue, tolerance, cooperation, mutual understanding, peaceful communication, and relationship-building. Community learning centres should also provide opportunities for adults to engage in practical reconciliation-related activities. It is concluded that effective community learning programmes can equip adults with knowledge and skills that encourage meaningful participation in reconciliation activities.
