Effect of Continuing Education on Social Mobility among Adult Learners

Abstract

Continuing education refers to educational opportunities undertaken by adults after their initial formal education to acquire additional knowledge, skills, qualifications, and competencies, while social mobility refers to movement or improvement in an individual’s social and economic position within society. Continuing education can provide adult learners with opportunities to improve their qualifications, develop new competencies, and expand their personal and professional prospects. However, limited access to further educational opportunities may restrict adults’ ability to improve their social position. Therefore, this study examines the effect of continuing education on social mobility among adult learners. Continuing education involves structured learning opportunities such as professional courses, adult learning programmes, certificate programmes, skills-development courses, workshops, and other forms of further education. These opportunities allow adults to update existing knowledge, acquire new competencies, and obtain qualifications that may enhance their capabilities. Continuing education can also expose learners to new areas of knowledge and provide opportunities for personal development. Through sustained educational development, adult learners may strengthen their capacity to improve their circumstances and pursue higher levels of social advancement. Social mobility refers to changes in an individual’s social and economic position over time. Among adult learners, social mobility may be reflected in improvements in occupational status, educational attainment, income position, access to better opportunities, and social standing. Continuing education can contribute to such changes by providing adults with knowledge and qualifications that may expand their opportunities for advancement. Adults who acquire additional educational competencies may therefore have greater opportunities to improve their socioeconomic position. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected continuing education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure continuing education and social mobility. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of continuing education on social mobility among adult learners. The study is expected to establish that continuing education has a significant effect on social mobility among adult learners. Adult learners with greater exposure to continuing education are expected to demonstrate stronger indicators of social advancement, including improved educational qualifications, occupational opportunities, and economic position. The findings are also expected to show that access to additional educational opportunities can provide adults with knowledge and competencies that support upward social movement. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to design continuing education programmes that provide relevant knowledge and competencies aligned with adults’ developmental needs. Learning activities should emphasize practical knowledge, transferable skills, and opportunities for progressive educational development. Such approaches may enable adult learners to use acquired knowledge and qualifications to improve their social and economic circumstances. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education facilitators, programme administrators, adult education institutions, employers, and education planners. Adult learners may benefit from increased opportunities for educational advancement and socioeconomic improvement. Facilitators and programme administrators may gain insight into the role of continuing education in supporting adult development, while institutions and employers may use the findings to strengthen opportunities for adult learning and advancement. Education planners may also benefit from evidence for developing programmes that promote educational and social advancement among adults. The study recommends that adult education institutions should expand access to relevant continuing education programmes that enable adults to acquire additional qualifications and competencies. Facilitators should ensure that learning content addresses practical educational and developmental needs, while programme administrators should provide flexible learning opportunities that accommodate adult learners’ responsibilities. Education planners should also support policies that encourage accessible and affordable continuing education. In conclusion, continuing education can provide an important pathway through which adult learners improve their qualifications, opportunities, and prospects for social mobility.
