Effect of Household Size on Participation in Adult Education Programmes

Abstract

Household size refers to the number of individuals living together within a household and sharing common domestic resources and responsibilities, while participation in adult education programmes refers to adults’ involvement in organised educational activities designed to improve their knowledge, skills, and personal development. The number of people in a household may influence the time, financial resources, and attention available to an adult who wishes to participate in educational programmes. This study will examine the effect of household size on participation in adult education programmes, with the purpose of determining whether the number of household members influences adults’ involvement in adult education. Household size can range from small households consisting of a few members to larger households involving several adults, children, and other dependants. As household size increases, adults may have greater responsibilities related to food, accommodation, childcare, household management, and other domestic needs. These responsibilities may affect the amount of time and resources available to adults for educational activities and may shape their ability to attend and remain involved in adult education programmes. Participation in adult education programmes involves enrolment, attendance, active involvement in learning activities, completion of programme requirements, and continued engagement in educational activities. Adults are often required to balance educational commitments with their existing household responsibilities. The size of the household may therefore influence participation by affecting the availability of time, financial resources, and personal attention required for consistent involvement in adult education programmes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on respondents’ household size and their level of participation in adult education programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that household size has a significant effect on participation in adult education programmes. It is expected that adults living in larger households may experience greater demands on their time and resources, which could affect their attendance, engagement, and continued involvement in educational programmes. The study may also indicate that adults from smaller households have greater flexibility for participating consistently in adult education activities. The findings will have implications for the planning and delivery of adult education programmes. Adult educators and programme administrators may need to recognise the different household circumstances of learners when organising classes, assignments, and other learning activities. Flexible learning arrangements and suitable programme schedules may help accommodate adults who have substantial household responsibilities and encourage sustained participation. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, adult education programme administrators, educational planners, community learning centres, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from educational arrangements that are more responsive to their household circumstances, while programme administrators may gain useful information for improving learner participation. Educational planners and policymakers may also use the findings when developing adult education programmes that consider the practical conditions affecting learners’ involvement. The study will recommend that adult education providers should consider household circumstances when designing programme schedules and learning activities. Flexible class arrangements, convenient learning periods, and learner-friendly programme structures should be encouraged to enable adults with different household sizes to participate effectively. Adult educators should also provide appropriate support for learners who face substantial household demands. The study will conclude that household size is an important household characteristic that can influence adults’ participation in adult education programmes and should be considered in programme planning and delivery.
