Effect of Library Orientation on Adults’ Knowledge of Library Services
Abstract
Library orientation provides adults with essential information about the resources, facilities, services, and procedures available in a library. Adequate knowledge of library services can help adults access information more efficiently, seek appropriate assistance, use library facilities confidently, and support their educational and personal learning needs. However, unfamiliarity with available services and procedures may limit effective library use among adults. This study will examine the effect of library orientation on adults’ knowledge of library services, with the purpose of determining whether structured orientation can improve adults’ understanding of the services provided by libraries. Library orientation involves organized instructional activities designed to familiarize users with the library environment and the services available to them. These activities may include guided tours, demonstrations, explanations of borrowing procedures, introduction to reference services, information-search guidance, and demonstrations of electronic resources. Orientation may also provide information about library rules, opening procedures, reading facilities, user assistance, and other services relevant to adults. Through practical and participatory activities, adults can become more familiar with how different library services operate and how they can be accessed. Adults’ knowledge of library services refers to their ability to identify, explain, and understand the purpose and appropriate use of services provided by a library. This may include knowledge of circulation services, reference assistance, information-search support, electronic information resources, reading facilities, borrowing procedures, and channels for obtaining help. Library orientation can improve this knowledge by presenting information clearly and allowing adults to observe or practise relevant procedures. Better knowledge may encourage adults to use library services more confidently and select services that correspond with their particular information needs. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning and library programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of library services. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of library orientation on adults’ knowledge of library services. The study is expected to establish that library orientation has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of library services. Adults who participate in structured orientation activities are expected to demonstrate better understanding of borrowing procedures, reference assistance, information-search services, electronic resources, reading facilities, and other available library services. The study is also expected to show that practical demonstrations, guided tours, and opportunities to interact with library personnel can strengthen adults’ familiarity with available services and improve their confidence in using them. The findings will have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, librarians, information-literacy educators, and community learning providers. Libraries can strengthen orientation activities by using practical demonstrations, simplified instructional materials, guided tours, and interactive sessions that allow adults to ask questions and practise basic procedures. Adult Education practitioners can also collaborate with librarians to incorporate orientation activities into relevant adult learning programmes. These approaches can improve adults’ information-literacy skills and encourage more effective and independent use of library services. The study will be significant to adult learners, libraries, librarians, Adult Education practitioners, educational institutions, and community learning organizations by providing useful information on the contribution of library orientation to adults’ knowledge of library services. It will recommend regular, accessible, and practical orientation programmes that introduce adults to available services and explain how these services can be accessed. The study will conclude that effective library orientation can improve adults’ knowledge of library services and promote more informed, confident, and purposeful use of library facilities.
