Impact of Accessibility Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Communication Barriers

Abstract

Accessibility education provides adults with knowledge and awareness that can promote effective communication and participation among people with diverse abilities and communication needs. Communication barriers are obstacles that make it difficult for individuals to access, understand, express, or exchange information effectively. These barriers may arise from inaccessible formats, unclear language, unsuitable communication methods, physical limitations, or inadequate consideration of individual communication needs. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of accessibility education on adults’ ability to identify communication barriers. Accessibility education can introduce adults to the principles of accessible communication and the different factors that may prevent individuals from receiving or expressing information effectively. Through discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises, and real-life examples, adults can learn to recognize barriers associated with language, information formats, communication channels, and different accessibility needs. Such learning experiences may also increase awareness of the importance of presenting information in ways that accommodate diverse individuals and reduce unnecessary communication difficulties. Adults’ ability to identify communication barriers refers to their capacity to recognize conditions or practices that may interfere with effective information exchange. This includes identifying unclear messages, inaccessible formats, inappropriate communication methods, limited communication support, and other factors that may prevent individuals from fully participating in communication. Accessibility education may improve this ability by helping adults understand the characteristics of common communication barriers and providing opportunities to examine practical situations in which accessibility challenges occur. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected accessibility education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure adults’ ability to identify communication barriers. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of accessibility education on adults’ ability to identify communication barriers. The study is expected to establish that accessibility education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify communication barriers. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved ability to recognize communication difficulties associated with inaccessible information, unsuitable formats, unclear messages, and inadequate communication support. The study may further establish that practical examples and participatory learning activities can improve adults’ awareness of communication barriers and their potential effects on inclusive participation. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, disability-support organisations, and information providers. Incorporating accessibility education into adult learning programmes may help adults develop practical skills for identifying and reducing communication barriers in community, workplace, educational, and public-service settings. Practical exercises involving different communication situations may also encourage learners to consider the diverse needs of people who receive and use information. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, persons with disabilities, community organisations, information providers, and other stakeholders interested in promoting accessible communication. It is recommended that accessibility education programmes should include practical activities that expose adults to different types of communication barriers and appropriate approaches for identifying them. The study concludes that accessibility education can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ ability to recognize communication barriers and contribute to more inclusive communication environments.
