Abstract

Adult Education provides adults with knowledge that can promote social inclusion, equality, and informed participation in community life. Communication rights of persons with disabilities refer to the rights of individuals with disabilities to access, receive, understand, express, and exchange information through appropriate communication methods and accessible formats. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of the communication rights of persons with disabilities. The study will focus on how educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of these rights and encourage greater recognition of the communication needs of persons with disabilities. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts relating to disability inclusion, accessible communication, communication barriers, and appropriate methods of interacting with persons with different communication needs. Through discussions, practical demonstrations, case examples, and participatory activities, adults can develop greater awareness of the importance of providing information in accessible and understandable forms. Such learning experiences may also help adults recognize how communication barriers can limit participation and why inclusive communication practices are important in homes, workplaces, educational settings, and communities. Adults’ knowledge of the communication rights of persons with disabilities involves their understanding of the right to access information, express themselves, receive appropriate communication support, and participate in communication without unnecessary barriers. It also includes awareness of communication methods such as sign language, captioning, Braille, augmentative and alternative communication, and other accessible formats where appropriate. Adult Education may strengthen this knowledge by providing learners with practical information about communication rights and opportunities to understand the importance of respecting different communication needs. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of the communication rights of persons with disabilities. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of communication rights. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of the communication rights of persons with disabilities. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved understanding of accessible communication, communication support, and the rights of persons with disabilities to participate effectively in information exchange. The study may further establish that practical learning experiences can improve adults’ awareness of communication barriers and encourage greater respect for diverse communication needs. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, disability-support organisations, and other stakeholders involved in inclusive education and community development. Incorporating disability-inclusive communication topics into Adult Education programmes may help adults develop practical knowledge for interacting respectfully with persons with disabilities. Demonstrations, role-play activities, and discussions involving different communication methods may also provide useful opportunities for learners to understand the practical importance of communication accessibility. The study will be significant to adult learners, persons with disabilities, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, disability advocates, and other stakeholders interested in promoting inclusive communication. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes should include practical learning activities on the communication rights of persons with disabilities and appropriate accessible communication practices. The study concludes that Adult Education can serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of communication rights and promoting more inclusive and respectful communication within communities.
