Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Embroidery Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their participation in vocational, creative, and income-generating activities. Embroidery is a decorative textile technique that involves the use of needles, threads, fabrics, patterns, and various stitching methods to produce designs on textile materials. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate embroidery techniques due to inadequate access to structured learning and practical skill-development opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of embroidery techniques. Adult education programmes can provide learners with practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In embroidery education, adults can learn about the identification and use of embroidery tools and materials, preparation of fabrics, transfer of designs, selection of suitable threads and stitches, proper needle handling, and methods of producing decorative patterns. These learning activities can enable adults to connect theoretical explanations with practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of the processes involved in embroidery. Adults’ knowledge of embroidery techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, design preparation, stitching methods, and finishing procedures required for embroidery activities. Adequate knowledge is important because proper selection of materials, accurate design transfer, appropriate stitch application, and careful finishing can influence the appearance and quality of embroidered products. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise different embroidery techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of embroidery techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of embroidery techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of embroidery techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of embroidery tools and materials, fabric preparation, design transfer, thread selection, stitch application, pattern development, and finishing procedures. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and retain knowledge of embroidery techniques. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of embroidery techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide adequate embroidery tools and materials, practical demonstrations, guided hands-on activities, appropriate learning resources, and opportunities for repeated practice. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support creative and vocational skill development, and improve their capacity to apply embroidery techniques effectively for personal, household, and income-generating purposes.
