Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Screen-Printing Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can enhance their vocational development, self-reliance, and participation in productive activities. Screen printing is a practical technique used to produce designs, texts, images, and patterns on materials such as fabrics, paper, and other suitable surfaces. It requires knowledge of printing materials, screens, inks, design preparation, image transfer, printing procedures, and finishing processes. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate screen-printing techniques due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of screen-printing techniques. Adult education programmes can provide learners with practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In screen-printing education, adults can learn about screen preparation, stencil and design development, ink selection, squeegee handling, positioning of materials, printing procedures, drying, and basic finishing. Such learning activities can enable adults to connect theoretical explanations with practical experiences and develop a better understanding of the processes involved in producing quality screen-printed materials. Adults’ knowledge of screen-printing techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, and practices required to carry out basic screen-printing activities effectively. Adequate knowledge is important because errors in screen preparation, design placement, ink application, pressure control, or drying can affect the quality and appearance of printed materials. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate screen-printing procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of screen-printing techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of screen-printing techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of screen-printing techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of screen preparation, design preparation, ink selection, stencil development, material positioning, printing procedures, drying, and finishing. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised hands-on activities provide adults with better opportunities to understand and retain knowledge relating to screen printing. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of practical screen-printing techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide appropriate screen-printing tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised activities, and relevant guidance on proper printing procedures. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply screen-printing techniques effectively for personal, entrepreneurial, and income-generating activities.
