Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Nail-Care Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve personal development, vocational competence, and participation in income-generating activities. Nail-care techniques involve knowledge of nail preparation, cleaning, shaping, cuticle care, product application, tool handling, hygiene, and safe working procedures. However, some adults may have inadequate knowledge of appropriate nail-care techniques because of limited access to structured and practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of nail-care techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In nail-care learning, adults can be introduced to appropriate nail-care tools and materials, nail preparation procedures, nail shaping, cuticle management, basic product application, hygiene practices, and proper handling and storage of equipment. These learning activities can enable adults to relate explanations to practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of appropriate procedures for effective nail care. Adults’ knowledge of nail-care techniques refers to their understanding of the tools, materials, procedures, hygiene requirements, and safety practices involved in maintaining and caring for nails. Adequate knowledge is important because improper tool use, poor hygiene, incorrect nail preparation, and inappropriate product application may affect the quality of nail-care services and create avoidable risks. Adult learning may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate nail-care procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of nail-care techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of nail-care techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of nail-care techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of nail preparation, shaping, cuticle care, tool handling, product application, hygiene, and safety practices. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities provide adults with better opportunities to understand and retain knowledge relating to proper nail-care procedures. The study will conclude that adult learning can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of nail-care techniques. It will recommend that adult learning and vocational programmes provide appropriate nail-care tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and adequate guidance on hygiene and safety. Strengthening these learning opportunities can improve adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and enhance their ability to apply appropriate nail-care techniques effectively in personal and income-generating activities.
