Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Textile Care Symbols

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge that can improve their ability to manage clothing and textile products effectively. Textile care symbols are standardized signs placed on garment and textile labels to communicate recommended methods of washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and professional care. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the meanings of these symbols, which can lead to inappropriate care practices and possible damage to textile materials. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of textile care symbols and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their ability to recognize and interpret these symbols correctly. Adult learning can provide practical experiences through demonstrations, visual materials, discussions, guided exercises, and repeated exposure to relevant examples. In learning activities relating to textile care, adults can be introduced to commonly used symbols and taught how different markings communicate specific care instructions. Practical activities may involve examining garment labels, matching symbols with their meanings, comparing care requirements, and identifying suitable care procedures for different textile products. These activities can help learners develop familiarity with textile care symbols and improve their understanding of the information communicated through them. Knowledge of textile care symbols involves the ability to recognize, interpret, and apply the meanings of symbols used on textile labels. Adults need to understand the information represented by symbols relating to washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and professional textile care. Adequate knowledge can enable individuals to follow appropriate care instructions, protect textile quality, reduce avoidable damage, and extend the useful life of garments and household textiles. Adult learning may therefore contribute to improved knowledge by providing clear explanations and opportunities for learners to practise interpreting different textile care symbols. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate symbol-identification assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of textile care symbols. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of textile care symbols. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of textile care symbols. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning experiences will demonstrate improved ability to identify symbols and understand the care instructions associated with washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and other textile-care processes. The findings are also expected to indicate that visual demonstrations and practical interpretation exercises can strengthen learners’ ability to apply textile care information when handling garments and other textile products. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, vocational instructors, textile educators, and skills-development programme facilitators. Learning programmes can incorporate real garment labels, symbol charts, practical demonstrations, matching exercises, and guided interpretation activities to make learning more practical and accessible. Providing repeated opportunities to interpret textile care symbols can help adults connect classroom knowledge with everyday clothing-care decisions and develop greater confidence in handling textile products appropriately. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, vocational training providers, textile practitioners, and stakeholders involved in practical skills development. It will recommend that Adult Education and vocational programmes include textile care symbol interpretation among relevant practical learning activities and provide appropriate visual and instructional resources. The study will conclude that well-organized adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of textile care symbols and strengthen their ability to apply care information appropriately in everyday textile management.
