Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Participation in Consumer Protection Activities

Abstract

Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies through formal, non-formal, or informal learning experiences, while consumer protection activities refer to actions undertaken by individuals or groups to promote fair treatment, safe products and services, accurate information, and the protection of consumers’ interests. Participation in consumer protection activities is important because it can help adults recognize unfair practices, report problematic products or services, seek appropriate remedies, and promote responsible consumer behaviour. However, limited knowledge of consumer rights and protection procedures may reduce adults’ involvement in such activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ participation in consumer protection activities. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge that can be applied to everyday economic and social situations. Through literacy education, consumer education, community learning, and other forms of adult learning, adults can develop skills for understanding product information, evaluating services, identifying unfair practices, keeping relevant transaction records, and communicating consumer complaints. Learning experiences can also expose adults to information about consumer responsibilities, available protection channels, and appropriate procedures for seeking assistance when consumer-related problems occur. Participation in consumer protection activities refers to the extent to which adults engage in actions aimed at protecting their interests and promoting fair consumer practices. Such activities may include reporting defective products, seeking redress for poor services, sharing information about consumer rights, attending consumer education programmes, participating in consumer advocacy activities, and communicating concerns to relevant institutions. Adult learning may influence participation by improving adults’ knowledge of consumer issues and their ability to take appropriate action when their consumer interests are affected. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult learning programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult learning and adults’ participation in consumer protection activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ participation in consumer protection activities. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ participation in consumer protection activities. Adults with greater exposure to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of consumer protection issues and participate more actively in activities such as reporting unfair practices, seeking redress, sharing consumer information, and attending relevant educational programmes. The findings may also reveal areas where adults require additional learning opportunities to improve their involvement in consumer protection. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate consumer education into relevant adult learning programmes to equip learners with practical knowledge about consumer rights, responsibilities, product information, service quality, complaint procedures, and available avenues for redress. Practical examples, case discussions, role-play activities, and analysis of consumer-related situations can help adults apply acquired knowledge to real-life consumer experiences. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, consumer protection organizations, community organizations, policymakers, and service providers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge and skills for protecting their interests as consumers, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing practical consumer education content. Consumer protection organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen educational programmes designed to encourage informed and responsible consumer participation. The study recommends that adult learning programmes should incorporate practical consumer protection education into appropriate learning activities. Adult educators should provide learners with relevant information about consumer rights, responsibilities, complaint procedures, product and service evaluation, and available protection channels. Consumer protection organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to expand access to consumer education programmes. The study concludes that adult learning can contribute to increased participation in consumer protection activities by equipping adults with the knowledge and skills required to recognize consumer issues and take appropriate protective actions.
