Impact of Adult Learning Programmes on Adults’ Participation in Peace Education
Abstract
Adult learning programmes are organized educational activities designed to provide adults with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that support personal and social development, while peace education involves learning processes that promote peaceful relationships, mutual understanding, tolerance, dialogue, and non-violent approaches to resolving disagreements. Participation in peace education can help adults develop constructive attitudes toward conflict and peaceful coexistence. However, limited exposure to relevant learning opportunities may reduce adults’ understanding and involvement in peace-oriented educational activities. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of adult learning programmes on adults’ participation in peace education. Adult learning programmes may include literacy classes, community learning sessions, workshops, discussion groups, seminars, and other structured learning activities. These programmes provide opportunities for adults to exchange ideas, develop critical thinking skills, examine social issues, and acquire knowledge that can be applied to everyday situations. Through interactive learning experiences, adults may develop greater awareness of peaceful communication, tolerance, cooperation, respect for different viewpoints, and non-violent approaches to disagreements. Adults’ participation in peace education involves attending peace-related learning sessions, engaging in discussions on peaceful coexistence, participating in educational activities that promote tolerance, and applying peace-oriented knowledge in appropriate social situations. Active participation can increase adults’ awareness of the causes and consequences of conflict and strengthen their understanding of peaceful approaches to social relationships. Adult learning programmes may therefore influence participation in peace education by providing accessible opportunities for adults to acquire and discuss knowledge related to peace and non-violence. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult learning programmes and adults’ participation in peace education. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning programmes have a positive impact on adults’ participation in peace education. Adults with greater exposure to structured learning opportunities are expected to demonstrate stronger involvement in peace-oriented educational activities and greater understanding of peaceful coexistence. The study may further establish that interactive adult learning experiences can encourage adults to engage more actively with issues relating to tolerance, dialogue, cooperation, and non-violent conflict resolution. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because adult learning programmes can provide practical opportunities for developing knowledge and attitudes that support peaceful relationships. Learning activities based on discussion, reflection, and exchange of experiences may help adults connect peace education concepts with situations in their everyday lives. Adult educators can therefore use participatory learning approaches to make peace education more relevant and meaningful to adult learners. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, community members, adult education practitioners, community leaders, education planners, peace educators, and researchers. Adults may gain increased opportunities to develop knowledge and attitudes that support peaceful coexistence, while community leaders may benefit from greater awareness of peace-related issues among community members. Adult education practitioners and education planners may also use the findings to strengthen peace-oriented learning programmes for adults. The study will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate peace education content through discussions, group activities, case studies, and practical learning experiences. Adult education centres should also create accessible opportunities for adults to participate in learning activities that promote tolerance, dialogue, cooperation, and non-violent approaches to disagreements. It is concluded that effective adult learning programmes can encourage greater participation in peace education and contribute to the development of adults’ knowledge and attitudes toward peaceful coexistence.
